First Trailer for “Origin” Drops at SDCC

by Gayane Kaligian · July 19, 2018

Comic-Con has descended upon San Diego once again! Every year, we see a host of new announcements and trailers from all of our favorite creators, including notable Harry Potter alumni Tom Felton and Natalia Tena (Nymphadora Tonks). They spoke today on a panel that included the first showing of the trailer for their new series, Origin, a sci-fi thriller set to premiere on YouTube Premium this year.

The show centers around a group of strangers who, in search of a fresh start on a distant planet, wake up trapped and alone when their spaceship is damaged. As they fight to survive, these passengers soon realize that one among their number is not who they claim to be.

Felton plays Logan, an angry antagonist to Tena’s character, Lana, whose resilience and toughness make her the group’s captain. They are joined by Shun, played by newcomer Sen Mitsuji, who also quickly emerges as a natural leader among the other passengers.

The trailer opens with a voiceover from Xavier Grey, the head of a corporation called Siren that promises a new life on the planet Theer to anyone with a troubled past. Logan, Lana, and nine other such people enter pods aboard a spacecraft but face a rude awakening when an asteroid strikes the ship. They quickly discover that some tragedy has occurred, since none of the crew or other passengers are left onboard, and they must now fend for themselves. A montage of intense action follows, as the passengers struggle with each other and to stay alive under dire circumstances.

Though this trailer answers some basic questions about the show’s premise, we’re left with so many more. What are all of these characters’ backstories? Why did everyone else abandon our heroes? What’s Logan’s deal? And to quote Lana, “What the hell happened on this ship?”

Today’s panel covered some more of our initial questions, with Anderson confirming that the time period is set in the near future and features wildly futuristic worlds. He also divulged that 60% of the show takes place aboard the ship, but a solid 40% is devoted to developing character backstories. A few details of Shun’s character were revealed – he feels guilty for the death of his brother and joined the mission as a result – but we’re still left curious about every other character!

Origin also features Adelayo Adedayo (Unlocked, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man), Nina Wadia (EastEnders, Bend It Like Beckham), Jóhannes Jóhannesson (Game of Thrones, Alpha), Wil Coban (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Horizon Zero Dawn), and Tara Fitzgerald (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Game of Thrones). The first two episodes will be directed by celebrated director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, AVP: Alien vs. Predator). The series is set to premiere later this year, but for now, you can watch the trailer below and follow Mugglenet’s journey through SDCC on our live Twitter and Instagram!
