J.K. Rowling and Whoopi Goldberg Discuss Lumos at New York Gala
On September 22, Lumos Foundation hosted its annual fundraising gala in New York. During the gala, Whoopi Goldberg led a discussion with J.K. Rowling and Lumos CEO Georgette Mulheir about their work as the charity drives to end institutionalization of children.
Jo began the interview by recapping how she was inspired to found Lumos after reading an article on children in institutions and seeing disturbing pictures of young kids caged in by chicken wire. With the aid of an animated video that Jo narrated for Lumos, she discussed alarming facts and figures that the world needs to be aware of in order to stop children from experiencing such traumas.
I think that the most heartbreaking thing to see is the children who are very young and then something just breaks psychically when they’re taken from their families. You saw that, even though they’ve been physically cared for, when they return to their families something has gone wrong.
Jo emphasized that this is indeed a problem that can be stopped. In order to help Lumos accomplish its goals, she encouraged generous nations and individuals to do a little extra “homework” before donating to a charity that might support institutions. Jo also encouraged well-intentioned volunteers to put their time and efforts toward community centers rather than institutions.
After Whoopi wrapped up the conversation, encouraging supporters to be generous in their giving, the audience at the gala was treated to a preview of an HBO documentary about Lumos (set to be released late next year) and a musical performance from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s Jamie Parker. Parker was accompanied by honored theatrical composer Jeanine Tesori.
It is Lumos’s goal to end the institutionalization of children worldwide by 2050. In the spirit of love and generosity this fandom knows so well, no contribution is too small. Please consider donating to Lumos to help the organization reach its goal.
