Callum Turner Talks New Films and His Hunger for Information
Fantastic Beasts actors are everywhere since the release of the newest movie, especially Ezra Miller and Eddie Redmayne, but what about Callum Turner, the actor embodying Theseus Scamander? The British actor recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight and Flaunt about Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, indie film Mobile Homes, and his passion for acting.
Seemingly the exact opposite of the new Fantastic Beasts movie is Turner’s film Mobile Homes, which coincidentally was released on the same day as Crimes of Grindelwald. In the film, Turner and Imogen Poots play a couple “living on the fringes of society.”
Turner said, “If I [were] to summarize the film, his journey, it would be: Man has dream that his girlfriend doesn’t believe in anymore and he doesn’t know why. That’s his story, and then everything else is filtered through that idea.”
On playing a brother in Crimes of Grindelwald, Turner said he actually had to research how brothers interact since he didn’t have much personal experience with any brotherly relationships. He described Theseus as “very head-in-the-sand,” but also a hugger who’s “trying to hug the whole world.”
Turner was asked what it’s like to be in a massive franchise.
If I’m going to be honest, the only thing you really have to check is how big it is. Once you’re over that – you know, [t]he [w]izarding [w]orld, the fandom, the fans are amazing, J.K. Rowling [and] all these people being really famous – once you’re past that and you’re doing the job, the work, it’s always the same.
How did he get over how huge the franchise is while filming?
I pretended it was a small independent film that no one would see, because I wanted to remove all the pressure. But as an actor and as a person it was a gift to be on that set.
Flaunt asked Turner about his acting experience. Turner described how every set is a learning experience. Why does he enjoy acting and learning?
I’m hungry for information. Whether that’s reading ‘Jane Eyre’ or a book on spirituality or space. I’m just hungry for as much culture as possible. Acting allows that to happen quickly.
Flaunt also did an incredible photo shoot with Turner. Check it out, and we’ll leave you with these wise words from Turner: “The universe guides you and brings you what’s right for you. You never miss out.”
