Germany Celebrates 20 Years of “Harry Potter” with New Editions
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter in Germany, brand-new editions of the original series have been released! Italian graphic artist and illustrator Iacopo Bruno created these stunning designs featuring rich colors and infinite detail.
Bruno spoke on his experience designing the books:
I love getting lost in the richness of details, in the complexity of decorations, in using images to tell more about the characters, and in typographic research.
Illustrating the twentieth-anniversary editions of Harry Potter for Carlsen’s German readers gave me the opportunity to confront myself with the imagery created by J.K. Rowling – which is among the largest and richest I have ever met in my career.
A lot of Bruno’s inspiration came from both Italian graphic design and Anglo-Saxon imagery. He searched his surroundings for inspiration and often consulted his own books and collections.
Carlsen, the German company that published the new editions, has been throwing Harry Potter-themed events across Germany all year. At this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, the publisher challenged attendees to attempt to break the record for the most people dressed as Harry Potter at one event. However, instead of breaking their intended record, they broke another – the largest fan gathering in Germany!
In case you missed it, we also learned this year that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is coming to Germany! The play has only ever been performed in English, with the German version titled Harry Potter und das verwunschene Kind. The production will open in Hamburg, Germany, in 2020.
Which of the new editions would you love to own? Comment and let us know!
