Carmen Ejogo Talks Season 3 of “True Detective”
Carmen Ejogo, who might be best known to MuggleNet readers as the Fantastic Beasts franchise’s Seraphina Picquery, has a leading role in the third season of True Detective. The latest season of the crime drama series premiered January 13 on HBO, and Ejogo recently spoke with Women’s Wear Daily (also known as WWD) about her role.
The magazine noted that the previous seasons of True Detective were criticized for their lack of meaningful female roles; however, they stated that Ejogo’s character, Amelia, has been praised already. It appears that Ejogo shared these fears about her character’s depth when taking on the role of Amelia.
I only saw maybe two or three episodes before I had to decide if I was going to sign on, and I was a little anxious about whether it was enough of a role for me, whether it was enough of a character beyond just the wife. My character is so fundamental to both bigger themes being explored and played out. It’s an incredibly poetic season and I’m literally the person who delivers that poetry.
Ejogo additionally expressed her excitement for the audience to get to know her character, who will develop over the course of the season.
I had a very interesting experience the other day with [a press day] where I could tell there were journalists in the room that had only gotten to see the first couple of episodes, and the reason I could tell is because there wasn’t quite the level of interest in where my character goes.
Interestingly, Amelia’s story is told over the course of a number of years, something that Ejogo described as “an incredibly exciting prospect” for her.
We see her again later in life, and I think there’s a contentment that comes with a woman who gets past the tougher years of child-raising, and maybe the toughest years of her marriage. That’s an incredibly exciting prospect to explore on-screen, as a woman in this industry, as a woman, as an actress, period.
