Interview: Daniel Radcliffe on Being a Toy
Daniel Radcliffe recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show, where he spoke about Harry Potter and seeing himself in toy form.
In the interview, Radcliffe revealed why he continues to embrace it whenever people talk to him about Harry Potter.
When I was young, I met an old punk who had been in a band that I really liked. So I went up to him and asked him about it, and he literally said, ‘I don’t talk about it.’ And that was kind of sad. I thought it would be sad to look back on this huge period of your life and not embrace it. As much as I’m happy to be doing other films now, I’m always genuinely very honored when someone comes up and says, ‘You were a huge part of my childhood.’
On the other hand, seeing himself in toy form isn’t quite so exciting as talking to folks about Potter. In advance of the release of Playmobil: The Movie, there’s a new toy version of Radcliffe. He said that although the director was excited about this, he wasn’t as much.
The director sent me a really well-meaning text with all the toys and stuff for when the film comes out, and he said, ‘Congratulations, you’re a toy!’ I was like, ‘I don’t want to rain on your parade, but I have been a toy a lot!’ Again, it sounds like a very conceited thing to say, but it’s not meant that way. It’s been a weird factor of my life. I’ve been seeing myself as weird plastic figures for a long time.
