Dame Emma Thompson Urges Immediate Action on Climate Change
In a new op-ed for CNN, Dame Emma Thompson (Sybill Trelawney) calls on everyone from officials at the highest ranks of the United States government to everyday citizens to take action when it comes to the changing climate.
Everything depends on what we do now.
She repeats those words three times throughout the piece, and with good reason. They sit at the crux of her point: that, unless we start working quickly toward fixing the climate, the problem will soon become irreversible.
While Thompson asks everyone to devote themselves to this cause, she is clear about the fact that individual actions and commitments will not be sufficient. Instead, she asks for change on the governmental level, particularly from countries like the US and China, which are responsible for most of the world’s CO2 emissions.
Thompson has spoken out before about pressing social and environmental issues, including the climate crisis. She is not the only Harry Potter cast member to use her influence for an important cause in the last month either; just ten days ago, Emma Watson spoke on gender equality at the G7 summit.
The penultimate line of Thompson’s op-ed will ring true for many Potter fans.
