The Warner Bros. Shield Gets a New Look
The iconic shield logo for which Warner Bros. is known has a new look! Warner Bros. Pictures is one of the production companies behind and the distributor of both the Harry Potter film series and the Fantastic Beasts film.
Ahead of the company’s centenary in 2023, Emily Oberman of Pentagram was asked to redesign the Warner Bros. “WB” shield emblem. Creative Review discussed the project, for which Oberman traveled to the company’s headquarters in Burbank, California.
The end result is a new brand strategy emphasising Warner Bros’ longstanding reputation for storytelling and is reflected by its new brand position: ‘We believe in the power of story’.
The shield was last updated in 1993, but the level of detail meant that it was difficult to use in certain contexts. The resulting logo is now streamlined and modernized from its previous appearance.
Oberman looked to make the shield more functional by ditching the sash graphic and streamlining its other key elements. The letterforms of the WB monogram have been redrawn to preserve their ‘quirkiness’ but make them ‘more modern’, according to Pentagram.
Among other changes, the Warner Bros. blue color has also been brightened for the new logo. Check it out!
A video that illustrates all the changes made to the Warner Bros. shield can be found from Creative Review. For more information about Pentagram, you can visit the company’s website. Oberman previously designed the new Wizarding World logo.
