Ezra Miller Among British LGBT Award Nominees, Forms Production Company
Congratulations are in order for Fantastic Beasts star Ezra Miller (Credence Barebone), who has plenty of excitement on the horizon, from an award nomination to a production company!
First, the nominees for the 2020 British LGBT Awards have been announced, and they have a few ties to the Wizarding World franchise.
Miller, who identifies as queer, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald costar Zoë Kravitz (Leta Lestrange) have been nominated in the LGBT+ Celebrity category.
Among the nominees in the Media Moment category are the BBC series Gentleman Jack and the Netflix series Sex Education. Gentleman Jack, which was nominated for its portrayal of “the real-life story of Anne Lister,” features both Gemma Jones (Madam Pomfrey) and Derek Riddell (Torquil Travers, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). Sex Education, nominated for its “diverse representation of LGBT+ characters and relationships,” features Stephen Fry (narrator of the British Harry Potter audiobooks) in one episode of its second season. “Renée Zellweger stars as gay icon Judy Garland” is in reference to the film Judy, which features Sir Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore). Judy‘s costume designer was Potter costume designer Jany Temime.
This isn’t the only big news for Ezra Miller, however! Miller has also launched a production company alongside artist and musician Saul Williams. According to Deadline, the company is called MartyrLoserKin. In a quote featured by Deadline, the company’s mission was described.
… create and proliferate works that dismantle conventional cinematic ideological frameworks, as well as to synergistically naturalize into this industry more poetic, queer, explorative, anarchic, diverse, subversive, non-binary, aboriginal, environmental, ecological and esoterically conscious content that will speak to both the times in which we live and the forces that seek to restrict them.
MartyrLoserKin’s first project will be a sci-fi musical titled Neptune Frost. Williams will direct the musical, and Deadline‘s description of the project includes some other big names.
The sci-fi musical follows an intersex African hacker, a coltan miner and the virtual marvel born as a result of their union. Miller will produce alongside Williams. Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame is set to executive produce alongside Stephen Hendel (Fela!). Principal photography begins is already underway in Rwanda.
The full list of 2020 British LGBT Awards nominees was published by Metro. Voting for the awards is now open, and the awards ceremony will take place on May 29.
