Georgia Bartender Brings People Together with Nightly Readings of “Harry Potter”
Every night at midnight, something spectacular is happening in Macon, Georgia. A local bartender, Jamie Helms, goes live on Facebook to read the tales of the Harry Potter series to the world! Helms recently lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic and began his readings as a way to share some positivity in the world and offer an escape for all who want one.
The first night Helms started his nightly readings, he had over 3,000 views, and people were watching from all over the world. Positively 478 interviewed Helms about his experience.
It has been really really strange but in a good way. I know every time I hit the live button, people are going to be watching me. I am a performer. I am an entertainer. I love that.
What started off as a bit of fun has turned into a great cause. After his first reading ended, people began asking Helms how they could donate tips to him, and he has raised over $500. With the money he’s raised from tips, Helms is giving back to the community in which he lives. The tips have not only helped him with his financial situation but also helped feed an estimated 12 families in need in the Macon, GA area.
Helms has a background in theater and has used this skill to bring the characters of Harry Potter to life. He describes the nightly routine as a “virtual bar,” where people can join by whatever means they can with a drink of choice to hear the books come to life. Helms is averaging two to three chapters each night during his readings, and the comments section alone is enough to keep anyone entertained. Helms encourages small talk, and people are already wanting to schedule a meetup once social distancing has ended.
The Harry Potter series holds a special place in Helms’s heart, and he is comforted to know that it’s also bringing joy to other people’s lives during the pandemic. He plans on finishing the entire series.
