Review: Butter Beer Peanut Butter from Nerdy Nuts!
When I was a kid, there were two things I loved more than just about anything else: peanut butter and the Harry Potter series. There was a period spanning several years where I basically survived on Potter books and peanut butter sandwiches (hold the jelly), so imagine my excitement when I was offered the chance to review Nerdy Nuts’ Butter Beer Peanut Butter!
Overall, I found the butterbeer-flavored peanut butter to be delightful. Everything from the packaging to the peanut butter itself is crafted with love and care by the good folks at Nerdy Nuts. The product combines the classic flavor of peanut butter with a fun butterbeer twist, and the consistency is thick and creamy without the runniness one sometimes finds in small-batch nut butters. I found that this product falls pretty heavily on the “sweet” side of the taste spectrum – I’m more of a salty and savory gal when it comes to nut butter, but to each their own – and Nerdy Nuts has a fairly robust collection of flavors to choose from, so if you like your nut butter savory, they’ve got your back.
First, let’s talk about this packaging! On the left-hand side, this jar of peanut butter features an adorable illustration of a smiling Harry wearing his scarlet and gold Gryffindor scarf, along with Hedwig on his shoulder and his broomstick in his hand.
To the right is a drawing of Hogwarts castle beneath a smiling sun, and the flavor name -“Butter Beer” – is written in the gold lightning bolt font we’ve all come to associate with our favorite series.
The illustrations help set the packaging apart from the crowd, and while Nerdy Nuts is not currently available in stores, it would definitely catch my eye if I saw it on the shelf.
In terms of consistency, this peanut butter is everything a good peanut butter should be. Nerdy Nuts makes all of their products by hand and to order, and the Butter Beer Peanut Butter had a texture similar to that of an organic peanut butter one might find at a grocery store. It’s thick and creamy with teeny-tiny grains of peanuts in the mix, and I found it to be satisfyingly viscous without being oily. It doesn’t clump up, so it’s easy to spread on an apple slice, piece of toast, or whatever your peanut butter vessel of choice might be.
While I found the taste of the butterbeer peanut butter to be a tad too sweet for everyday use, I was pleasantly surprised at how well balanced the butterbeer and peanut butter flavors are. This product has all the hearty goodness of peanuts elevated by the sugary taste of butterbeer – sweet, nutty earthiness with a rich, sugary finish. The saccharine notes of the butterbeer complement rather than overwhelm the classic peanut butter taste.
The main thing I felt was missing is salt – the butterbeer flavor has 65 mg of sodium per serving, which is right around average for non-natural peanut butter, but the sugar, cocoa, and high fructose corn syrup in the recipe come through much more strongly than the saltiness. I sampled the peanut butter with an apple, a banana, and a salted pretzel, and the pretzel was by far my favorite because of the added sodium.
Even though this isn’t the peanut butter I’ll be reaching for to spread on my morning English muffin, I really enjoyed trying out Nerdy Nuts’ Butter Beer Peanut Butter and would definitely order it again. I can see using it to whip up a batch of peanut butter cookies, enjoying it with a salty snack from time to time, or perhaps making it the filling for these Peanut Butter Chocolate Frogs. Nerdy Nuts has a great selection of peanut butter with original flavors like Twix, Monster Cookie, and Salted Caramel – and they change up flavors seasonally – so I’m excited to see what they come up with next!
