“Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” Cast and Crew Among Oscars 2021 Nominees
This just in! Following a belated but finally ongoing film awards season, we are happy to announce that there are plenty of cast and crew members from the Harry Potter and the Fantastic Beasts films who have made it among this year’s Academy Awards nominees.
Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) has been nominated for Actor in a Leading Role for playing 1930s Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz in Mank. If he wins, this will be his second Oscar in the same category after his performance in 2018’s Darkest Hour, also a biopic. Oldman’s costar Amanda Seyfried has received a nomination for Actress in a Supporting Role. The film is running for Best Picture. In this latter category, one of its competitors is The Trial of the Chicago 7, starring Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).
Mank has also been nominated for both Sound and Music (Original Score), as has News of the World, scored by Fantastic Beasts composer James Newton Howard. The former movie’s director, David Fincher, has been nominated for Directing along with Thomas Vinterberg for Another Round, which stars Mads Mikkelsen. The future Gellert Grindelwald actor’s Danish-language movie is also nominated in the International Feature Film category.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is also nominated for Actor in a Supporting Role (Sacha Baron Cohen), Writing (Original Screenplay), Music (Original Song) (“Hear My Voice”), Film Editing, and Cinematography, in which category it is running up against Mank and News of the World.
While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows composer Alexandre Desplat was not nominated for his music in The Midnight Sky, the movie has been included for a potential Oscar for Visual Effects together with Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s action-thriller starring Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart), Clémence Poésy (Fleur Delacour), and Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory).
In the Production Design category, we may root for Mank, News of the World, and Tenet. In Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling, aside from the once again nominated Mank, we may also see the Jane Austen adaptation Emma, starring Bill Nighy (Rufus Scrimgeour), pocket an award or two. Finally, Wolfwalkers with Simon McBurney (the voice of Kreacher in Deathly Hallows – Part 1) is nominated for Animated Feature Film.
The nominees were announced live today by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. The full list of nominees is now available on the Academy Awards’ official website. The award ceremony will be broadcast live on Sunday, April 25, only on ABC. What do you think of the nominations? Are you going to be watching live?
