Mads Mikkelsen Cast in “Indiana Jones” 5
It has been revealed that Mads Mikkelsen, who will play Gellert Grindelwald in the remainder of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, has been cast in Indiana Jones 5.
Little has been revealed about Indiana Jones 5; is it currently unknown whom Mikkelsen will be playing, and the official name of the film is yet to be found out.
What we do know, however, is that Mikkelsen will star opposite Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and while Steven Spielberg directed the first four Indiana Jones films, James Mangold will be taking over as director of the fifth film. Spielberg will, however, still be involved in the making of the film, taking the role of producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy (Back to the Future, Jurassic Park), Frank Marshall (The Secret World of Arrietty, Back to the Future), and Simon Emanuel, who served as assistant director on the first three Harry Potter films and production manager on the final four Harry Potter films.
Like the upcoming and also still-untitled Fantastic Beasts 3, Indiana Jones 5 has also been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is currently set to be released on July 29, 2022, debuting more than four decades after the very first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was released in 1981 when Ford was 38 years old.
Its sequel, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, was released in 1984, followed by Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Almost 20 years later, Ford returned in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, and the now 78-year-old Ford will once again be reprising his iconic role.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull alone made almost $790 million globally, with the whole franchise having had made almost $2 billion.
Mikkelsen isn’t the first actor from the Wizarding World to join the cast of Indiana Jones. Julian Glover (the voice of Aragog) had a role in Last Crusade, Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn) and John Hurt (Mr. Ollivander) starred in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and George Harris (Kingsley Shacklebolt) was in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
It was also recently announced on the official Twitter page for Indiana Jones that John Williams, who composed the music for the first three Harry Potter films and the first four Indiana Jones films, will be returning for the fifth installment.
