Warwick Davis Makes His Way to the “Bake Off” Tent for Comic Relief in Archival Footage
While we know Harry Potter actor Warwick Davis for his roles as both Professor Flitwick and the voice – and later body – of the goblin Griphook, did you know that he has taken on another role: a baker in a certain reality television show tent? Although the series is known as The Great British Bake Off in the United Kingdom and The Great British Baking Show in the United States, Davis’s involvement was for The Great Comic Relief Bake Off, a charitable spin-off of the usual program to benefit Comic Relief.
In a clip posted to YouTube by the official account for The Great British Bake Off earlier this month, Davis is profiled in footage from 2013, in which he is shown discussing the challenge ahead of him.
I’ve worked on all sorts of big productions in the past – Star Wars, Harry Potter. I’ve worked with big names in the entertainment industry. None of them give me the fear and trepidation that I’ve got for this today.
To be more precise, as text on the screen soon reads, that challenge is “iced biscuits,” or cookies. Fortunately, though, Davis seems to work his magic on the judges. Judge Paul Hollywood notes, in fact, that Davis has “nailed it.” Davis, however, isn’t so sure if that is a compliment.
[Paul] said I’ve nailed it. That’s good, isn’t it? That is good. It’s not a very sort of ‘baking’ term, though, is it, really? Um, but no, no, I’ll take it as a compliment.
The technical challenge that follows is to bake a Bakewell tart, a British dessert that features ingredients including jam, frangipane, and almonds. Here, in an attempt to make himself look more like a chef, Davis attempts to pick up the pastry dough he’s working with and then realizes that the bottom of the pan can be removed.
When asked by host Mel Giedroyc if baking is more stressful than acting, Davis responds affirmatively.
It’s far more stressful, yeah.
Giedroyc, on the other hand, warns Davis that he should be more afraid of judge Mary Berry. Spoiler alert: It all turned out well for Davis, who was ultimately crowned the champion.
