Daniel Radcliffe Cast in Off-Broadway Production of “Merrily We Roll Along”
Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe is no stranger to the world of musical theater, and he will be returning to the stage later this year for an off-Broadway production of the late Stephen Sondheim’s 1981 musical Merrily We Roll Along at New York Theatre Workshop.
Deadline was among the outlets to break the casting news and wrote that this revival of Merrily We Roll Along will be directed by Maria Friedman and choreographed by Tim Jackson. Daniel will play the role of Charley Kringas, one of the musical’s leads.
Radcliffe, who appeared on Broadway in the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 2011, will play Merrily‘s Charley, one of three longtime show business pals whose friendship is presented in reverse chronological order, from its sad dissolution to its hopeful beginning. Among the beloved Sondheim songs given to Charley are ‘Old Friends’ and ‘Good Thing Going.’
Merrily We Roll Along was previously given an off-Broadway revival in 1994. That production was nominated for a 1995 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, and lead actor Malcolm Gets was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his role as Franklin Shepard.
According to Playbill, New York Theatre Workshop’s upcoming production of Merrily We Roll Along also has a connection to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: It “is presented by special arrangement with Sonia Friedman Productions, the Menier Chocolate Factory, and Patrick Catullo.” (Sonia Friedman, alongside Sir Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, is one of the producers of Cursed Child.)
Additional casting for the 2022 revival of Merrily We Roll Along has yet to be announced. Are there any actors you’d like to see in this production? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
