“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” Breaks Records in Melbourne, Australia
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is making record waves in Australia. Cursed Child has surpassed the one-million-tickets marker and smashed the record for most tickets sold of any stage play in all of Australia!
This isn’t the only record Cursed Child has broken there. Within the first four hours on the first day of sales, over 128,000 tickets were purchased. In its first year alone, more than 326,500 people saw the show, topping the previous record in the history of Australian theater. Over half of the audience were first-time theater visitors.
Due to the pandemic, Australian productions were halted and recently started up again in November 2021. Out of all ticketholders, 80% decided to hold onto their tickets and see the magic for themselves. Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender are extremely grateful to the Australian fan base.
We are so grateful to our audiences in Australia to help us reach this momentous milestone in the life of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Princess Theatre. We can’t wait to re-open with the reimagined version of our play and introduce even more new audiences to the joy and excitement of live theatre. We look forward to sharing the magic with theatregoers in Melbourne for a long time to come.
Rehearsals are underway now, and the cast is excited to bring the one-part play to life – including Harry Potter himself. Actor Gareth Reeves shared his experience with the cast.
It has been amazing to experience how the city of Melbourne has embraced us over the last few years, so starting a new chapter with the reimagined production is exhilarating. Being in the rehearsal room is giving us all a burst of energy for these characters we love, and I can’t wait to share the new version of this story with audiences in May.
Cursed Child is bringing some magic to the Land Down Under and breaking records across the board. You can get tickets on the official site today.
