Diary of a First Year – Part 2
September 1, night
Dear Diary,
I can’t sleep yet. I’m just so excited!
First of all, tonight. We got to the station, and all the first years were gathered together. We took boats to the castle. It’s huge! When we walked into the halls, it was like I could feel all the magic surrounding me. In the Great Hall, the candles were shining, and suddenly, everyone was looking right at us. I wanted to disappear on the spot; when do we learn the spell for that? And then the Sorting Hat began to sing. I didn’t catch most of it because I was so nervous, but it mentioned the four Houses and their traits. I didn’t really feel brave or kind or intelligent or cunning at all, just really nervous. When it was my turn, I put the hat on and it talked to me! It said I had a willing mind and a desire to learn with a thirst to prove myself. I was Sorted into… Ravenclaw! The whole table clapped, and right away, my first thought was a relief; I love blue, so the uniform won’t be a problem. Everyone was so welcoming.
Our common room doesn’t have a password, but a riddle. This will be fun! A new challenge every time you need to get in, and the prefect, Troy, told us that it is very effective at keeping other students out. The knocker asked us “where does a story begin?” and Troy’s answer was “Every ending is a new beginning.” Clever!
Inside, the common room is airy and full of books. There were even some books floating from shelf to shelf. In my dormitory with the other first years, we have a nice view of the lake below us and the mountains. Tomorrow, we start classes! I can’t wait.
