Back in 2017, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them scored the first-ever Academy Award for a film in the Wizarding World franchise with its win for Costume Design. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald made the short list at the 91st Academy Awards for Music (Original Score) thanks to the musical genius of James Newton Howard.
This year, fellow Wizarding World composers Alexandre Desplat and John Williams have made the short list in the Music (Original Score) category, for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which also stars David Bradley (Argus Filch) and Ron Perlman (Gnarlak), and The Fabelmans, respectively. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is additionally short-listed for Music (Original Song) and Sound.
Several other projects featuring Wizarding World alumni were also recognized on the short list for Music (Original Score), including The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell (Percival Graves) and Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody); Don’t Worry Darling, starring Gemma Chan (Madam Ya Zhou); and The Woman King, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin (young Tom Riddle).
The Batman, which stars Colin Farrell, Zoë Kravitz (Leta Lestrange), and Robert Pattison (Cedric Diggory), appeared on the short lists for Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, and Visual Effects. Thirteen Lives, starring Colin Farrell, was also recognized on the short list for Visual Effects, while The Whale, featuring Samantha Morton (Mary Lou Barebone), was also short-listed for Makeup and Hairstyling.
Many Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter series alumni have already been recognized for their efforts this awards season. The Banshees of Inisherin leads the Golden Globe nominations this year with eight nods, including acting nominations for both Farrell and Gleeson. Other Wizarding World alumni nominated at the ceremony include Imelda Staunton (Professor Umbridge), Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), and Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley).
The 95th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be held on March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Will you be watching? Let us know in the comments!
