Colin Farrell Gives Fans an Exciting Update on “The Penguin”
Colin Farrell, who played the villainous Percival Graves in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is set to return as another antagonist, playing the Penguin in an HBO Max spin-off of 2022’s The Batman.
The 46-year-old actor spoke about the upcoming project with Variety at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. He said he had no idea he would end up with his own spin-off project while working on the film but admitted that he felt he “wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character” in the movie as much as he had hoped.
Because there was all this extraordinary work done by [makeup artists] Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.
Farrell credits Marino, particularly, for his interest in exploring the character further.
Honest to god, any thought I had about an extended series was to do with Mike Marino’s work. I just knew there was so much to do with it — age it up, age it down. He’s just such a genius, Mike, so it was his work that was the inspiration, really.
The Banshees of Inisherin star also revealed a hilarious tidbit about an early experience testing out the Penguin’s makeup. While in Ireland, he donned the dramatic look while on a casual run to Starbucks. “People don’t be paying as much attention as you think!” he said.
Fans of The Batman will be excited to learn that production on The Penguin will begin next month. Farrell told Variety that work on the series is expected to take around five or six months.
