Is Luna Lovegood the Kindest Character in “Harry Potter”?
It’d be pretty safe to say that every Harry Potter fan adores Luna for one reason or another. Typically, that reason is her uniqueness; however, there’s often less discussion about how kindhearted she is. Let’s take a look back at some of Luna’s most thoughtful moments.
1. She reassures Harry about Thestrals.
In this wholesome scene in the film version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Luna reassures Harry by explaining what Thestrals are and why he can see them, as well as why she can see them too. She tells him about losing her mother, demonstrating that acceptance of death and finding peace are possible even after a traumatic loss like Harry has recently experienced by witnessing Cedric’s death at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This conversation proves that she’s sensitive to the feelings of those close to her and makes sure they feel safe.
2. She always sticks up for Harry.
In the very first film where we’re introduced to Luna – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – we are immediately taken aback by her instant kindness and loyalty to Harry. Even when nobody believes Harry about Voldemort coming back, Luna stands up for him.
3. She supports Ron in his first Quidditch match.
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ron has his first match as Keeper for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and Luna is his number one supporter with her lion hat – even though she’s not even in Gryffindor. This again shows her loyalty and kindness to her friends. When everyone is laughing at Ron and his nerves, she sticks by his side in the boldest way possible.
4. She strikes up a friendship with Ollivander.
When she’s stuck in the Malfoys’ dungeon with Mr. Ollivander, that’s arguably when Luna’s kindness is most present. He is frail and vulnerable after Voldemort’s torture, but Luna keeps her strength of character and cares for him while they are both stuck there.
5. She shows respect for Dobby.
Luna has massive respect for Dobby, which shows that her kindness is displayed to more than just humans. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, she calls him “sir” – a term that wizards almost never use for house-elves. When Dobby dies after their escape from Malfoy Manor, Luna closes his eyes for him to make it look as though he is sleeping, which is a gentle gesture that shows respect for both Dobby and his grieving friends.
These five moments alone prove Luna’s kindness, loyalty, and quirkiness. No wonder she is one of the best-loved characters in the Harry Potter franchise! What is your favorite moment of kindness from Luna? Let us know in the comments.
