Awards Roundup: Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore Leads Oscars In Memoriam, John Williams Wins 26th Grammy
It’s awards season, and there’ve been quite a few Harry Potter alumni receiving awards over the last several weeks. We’re here to give you the recap in case you’ve missed any.
Grammy Awards & Saturn Awards
On February 4, John Williams, who gave us the beloved “Hedwig’s Theme,” won his 26th Grammy Award, Best Instrumental Composition, for a similarly named track – “Helena’s Theme” from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Coincidentally, on the same night as the Grammys, Williams also won his 10th Saturn Award, Best Film Music, again for his work on the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones series.
British Academy Film Awards
As we reported in our January awards roundup, the 77th annual BAFTA Film Awards were hosted by David Tennant (Barty Crouch Jr.) on February 18. You can catch his hilarious opening sketch here:
Though he did not win in his nominated category for Wonka, David Heyman, who produced all the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films, was on hand to introduce Fantastic Beasts alumna Samantha Morton (Mary Lou Barebone), who received the highest honor at the BAFTAs, the BAFTA Fellowship award. She dedicated it to every child in care and poverty, having herself come from those circumstances.
Oppenheimer, which stars Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart) and Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), took home seven awards, including Best Film. And The Boy and the Heron, starring Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory), won the award for Animated Film.
Screen Actors Guild Awards
The 30th annual SAG Awards were handed out on February 24, and Kenneth Branagh was included among the award winners for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for Oppenheimer. Gary Oldman, however, did not have a large enough part to be listed, but he certainly contributed to the cast’s success!
Academy Awards
Oppenheimer was also the big winner at this year’s Oscars on March 10, taking home seven awards, including Best Picture. Robert Pattinson‘s The Boy and the Heron won Best Animated Feature Film, while The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, featuring Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort), won Best Live Action Short Film.
But Potter fans were most excited to note that the In Memoriam segment opened with Sir Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore giving his iconic line, “Do not pity the dead… Pity the living, and above all, all those who live without love.” Gambon, of course, passed away last fall.
