Drarry is Gay Pride and Prejudice

Drarry has been a beloved Harry Potter Ship for many years since the release of the books and movies. The numerous fanfictions and fan art all over the internet dictate the acceptance and popularity of the pairing. The Potterheads have created countless ships throughout the series, some even with an inanimate object. Drarry seems to be a good and substantial ship to swoon over out of all the weird and nonweird ships in the Harry Potter world.

Perfect enemies to lovers, Drarry is a mirror to Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice. Ardently loved by the generations, the novel is her most popular worldwide work. Austin’s Pride and Prejudice revolves around lively Elizabeth Bennet and rich aristocrat, Fitzwilliam Darcy. The story follows their blooming romance, despite their pride and prejudices against each other. Darcy has immense pride in his status and wealth, whereas Elizabeth takes pride in her individuality. They also glare at each other with prejudices in social rank and status.

Doesn’t this also sound like a Drarry fanfiction pretext? Draco Malfoy is a rich, wealthy person, who is proud of his riches and is discriminatory towards the kind-spirited half-blood Harry Potter. Yet, he still holds a soft corner for Harry, whom he pretends to hate. I think I have seen an edit of Drarry just like this.

The same works for Harry’s point of view as well! Harry Potter, a lively half-blood, is proud of his friends and legacy but is prejudiced towards the rich, annoying, and obsessed snob Draco Malfoy. He thinks Draco Malfoy is an egotistical jerk who lacks human emotions but as love blooms between the two, he sheds his pride and prejudice.

An author once said, “There is a fine line between love and hate”. Austin’s characters and Drarry are both flowers of the same plant. They both follow the same trajectory of meet, hate, hate, double hate, loathe entirely, then suddenly, a surge of love when they meet again, and then to being hopeless and ardent in love like they will die if they do not see each other. Austin has given a recipe for an enemies-to-lovers trope, often seen in modern literature.

Austin has also blessed the audience with a dramatic scene where Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are fighting, and suddenly one character confesses their feelings and the other is stunned. Now tell me this doesn’t sound like a Drarry fanfiction! The Drarry storyline is snippets of Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth and Darcy’s love story has all flavors such as romance, drama, entertainment, spice, etc which enhance the reader’s interest. Likewise, Drarry fanfiction also harbors all these impressions and hints.

From forced dancing to long eye contact, from outburst fights to beautiful laughs, from momentary touches to hand holding, from pride and prejudice to humility and love, Drarry follows Austin’s classic and standard enemies-to-lovers trope.

What other ship in the Harry Potter universe would you associate with the classic literature pairings or storylines?

My mind is like a box of candies from honeydukes, a colorful combination of different tastes. Writing about Harry Potter is a ticket to platform nine and three quarters for any Harry Potter fan. I wish to write about each alley and every wand of this universe.
