HBO CEO Comments on “Harry Potter” TV Series: “Late ’26-’27”

After the Emmys this past weekend, HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys spoke to Deadline about the future shows of HBO, including sharing more details about the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

The major news to come from the interview is an update on the scheduled release window for the show. While we’ve been waiting on a 2026 release, as suggested by Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav back in February, Bloys has now revealed that HBO is looking at a slightly later premiere window for the show. He said the company is aiming for “late ’26-’27” but that it’s impossible to know for certain given that the writers are “just getting started.”

Bloys also provided more information in relation to the open casting call published last week. The call, which asks for young talent to send in self-taped video auditions for the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, set out filming dates between 2025 and 2026. Rumors have been circulating that production for the show will begin in April 2025, but Bloys clarified that that date has surfaced as a result of it being the cut-off for the age of the actors, not an official filming date.

We haven’t announced any [date]. I think they were talking about [the] age [the young actors] will be in [April], that doesn’t mean necessarily a production start date.

Alongside casting, he also confirmed some details about other members of the crew. We already knew that Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod have signed on to the project, as writer and director, respectively. Bloys mentioned in the interview that other department heads are in the process of being hired, although he didn’t mention any names or departments in particular.

On the subject of those already in on the project, Bloys shared his own thoughts on the show so far. He said that he is “very, very happy and excited” about the work Gardiner and Mylod have done so far. While it’s clearly still early days, Bloys’s positivity about the show’s progress is definitely a good sign.

What do you think about the latest updates on the series?
