Harry Potter Fan Club App Quietly Shuts Down
The official Harry Potter Fan Club app disappeared on October 1, with no announcement or advanced warning posted anywhere besides the app itself, as reported by La Gazette du Sorcier.
Back in September 2019, Wizarding World Digital released the official Wizarding World app for some countries, featuring all of the content from the Wizarding World website, from a Sorting ceremony and Patronus test to quizzes and weekly features, as well as an official fan zine. The app was then rolled out to several more countries in 2021, rebranding as the Harry Potter Fan Club app following the launch of the official Harry Potter Fan Club in October 2019.
And now, a few days ago, a notice was posted on the app announcing that “all good things must come to an end” and stating that the app would shut down, with a final sign-off of “Mischief Managed.”
All content from the app is still available on the Wizarding World website. It’s uncertain why the app was shut down, with no reason given in the post. However, the app has clearly not been a priority for a while, given that it was still available only in English until the end – despite being available in non-English speaking countries, such as France, Belgium, and Switzerland – and given that the Sorting Hat quiz on the website was relaunched earlier this year to incorporate more languages.
This is the first of two Wizarding World apps planned to shut down this month. Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will close most of its servers later this month, although its players got much more notice than the users of the Harry Potter Fan Club app. That shutdown was announced in August to give fans the chance to play the game for one final season.
