The Royal Mint Expands Its Wizarding World Coin Collection

The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom is well-known for its commemorative coins. Designs have been dedicated to various franchises, occasions, and events in the past and embossed onto 50 pence or £2 coins. Harry Potter is no exception to this, and the Royal Mint has now expanded its magical collection to include a new 50-pence piece.

Named “The Black Lake,” the coin is dedicated to the second task of the Triwizard Tournament, which takes place in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The second task includes a dangerous descent into Hogwarts’s lake, following a riddle from its resident merpeople to find someone each champion would miss. The coin is an ode to Harry’s attempt at the task and shows him being pulled away from the hostages by merpeople as he tries to rescue all of those remaining. The coin will be available in traditional silver, gold, and full-color versions.

The coin won’t be circulated in the UK and will instead be available only via the Royal Mint website. The coin becomes the second design to be released this year, after the Royal Mint created the Winged Keys coin in recognition of Harry’s journey through the third-floor corridor in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Other Harry Potter designs include a dedication to Albus Dumbledore and a design featuring the silhouette of Hogwarts, both of which were announced and debuted in 2022.

The official announcement of this coin on the Harry Potter website also teases “more designs coming soon,” although there are no rumors yet as to which scenes could be depicted next. What moments are you hoping will arise for future coin designs?
