Top 15 Moments of “A Very Potter Musical”
It’s been 15 years since StarKid, a theater company that started out as a small group of college students at the University of Michigan, graced our computer screens with a musical about our favorite orphan boy living under the stairs with a scar on his forehead. Many still quote the show to this day. To celebrate 15 years, here are 15 of my favorite moments.
15. Draco’s Hilarious “Unbreakable Vow”
When I first watched this scene, I could not stop laughing. I later found out that Lauren Lopez (Draco) improvised the last bit of it when he said Voldemort had to be his slave for an entire day and went on bantering, and Joe Walker (Voldemort) just went along with it.
14. Voldemort Trying to Recreate His Connection to Quirrell with Bellatrix
It’s no secret that “Quirrelmort” – portrayed by the actors sharing a costume back-to-back – was one of the most iconic parts of the entire show. I found it absolutely hilarious when Voldemort tried to fill the void by going back-to-back with Bellatrix and mentioning that something was missing.
13. “Different as Can Be”
The whole song “Different as Can Be” was full of hilarious Quirrelmort moments I could not ignore, such as Quirrell mentioning how they are an odd couple. It was the start of many hilarious banters. Walker and Rosenthal’s dancing was very much in sync with each other, which made the song ten times better.
12. “To Dance Again”
Voldemort singing “To Dance Again” was what made me fall in love with the witty Joe Walker as Voldemort. His tap dancing was the icing on the cake.
11. Dumbledore Riding Rumbleroar to Pigfarts
Rumbleroar was real the whole time!
10. “Pigfarts, Pigfarts, here I come, Pigfarts, Pigfarts, yum yum yum”
We all know Draco’s love of Pigfarts, but this song really drove the point home.
9. Dumbledore’s Obsession with Zac Efron and His Zefron Poster
There were so many iconic lines from this running gag that I couldn’t pick just one. The fact that the Zefron poster turned out to be a Horcrux just made the joke so much better.
8. Harry’s Song for Cho
This song is the very reason I know about Winnipeg being in Canada. The whole song was swoon-worthy and hilarious that it was about the wrong girl.
7. “What the hell is a Hufflepuff?”
15 years later, and people still quote this meme at conventions, confusing anybody who has not seen the show. (The answer: Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders.)
6. Harry and Ginny’s First Kiss
Let’s be honest: We all cheered when Harry finally kissed Ginny. One of Darren Criss’s all-time favorite songs to sing live is “Not Alone.”
5. Ron and Hermione’s Kiss
That French kiss was hilarious, and Ron’s cheer at the end was so iconic that I had to include it on the list.
4. Dumbledore’s Introduction
One day, Harry will find that hidden swimming pool. This alone began my love for Dylan Saunders.
3. “Voldemort Is Going Down”
I know a lot of fans won’t agree that this song is ranked so high, but it is such an underrated number. When I first watched this in 2009, it was my favorite moment of the whole show and just hyped me up for the finale.
2. “Granger Danger”
This song is still incredible, between the Ron/Draco banter and both characters realizing their love for Hermione, which is so relatable. Joey Richter and Lauren Lopez killed it and are now even married.
1. “Goin’ Back to Hogwarts”
I had to save this song for number one. This song introduced the world to Darren Criss. It’s the song that made the show go viral 15 years ago. To this day, I still sing it whenever It comes on my playlist. It set a sensation in motion. How many of us still remember every single lyric?
All these moments, plus the entire cast and crew, made this show and music legendary in the Potter fandom many years later. You can relive these moments and the entire musical for free on YouTube.
