How Four Different Sorting Hat Results Brought My Family Closer Together

Harry Potter has been in my sister’s and my lives since childhood, making it part of our parents’ lives too. Just like us, they became very familiar with not just basic Harry Potter knowledge but also character facts, quotes, the significance of Horcruxes, and more. My sister and I already knew our Hogwarts Houses, and we wanted to know our parents’ results. This led all of us to take and retake the Sorting Hat quiz and ask the question: Can people Sorted into different Hogwarts Houses get along?

After completing the Sorting Hat quiz, my family and I were surprised to find that we received four different results – Hufflepuff for my sister, Gryffindor for my mom, Ravenclaw for my dad, and Slytherin for me. You would think that four people from four different Hogwarts Houses would not easily get along or work well together. This, however, is not the case. My family and I are always ready to help and support each other. Being Sorted into different Houses turned our differences into strengths.

So how does this work? When faced with a problem, each family member brings a different perspective on how to solve it. My sister, a kind and observant Hufflepuff, tackles the issue by looking at the pros and cons of possible outcomes and trusts that together, we can make a successful decision. Skilled in his knowledge, my Ravenclaw dad uses facts and logic to solve it. My fiercely brave Gryffindor mom makes sure that all opinions are heard and confronts the problem head-on. And as a Slytherin, I use my cleverness to find the quickest and most effective way to reach our goal.

When it comes to quality time, Harry Potter has been a common interest that my family and I enjoy together. When I was a kid, my parents threw me a Harry Potter party for my eighth birthday – complete with a replica shrieking book toy as a gift – and took me to Harry Potter book parties. That’s when my love for the Wizarding World began! Since then, we’ve been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort, tried butterbeer recipes at home, and of course, repeatedly watched all of the Harry Potter movies. My sister and I, who are more versed in the Wizarding World, enjoy Harry Potter events – we went to Harry Potter: Magic at Play Chicago and met Tom Felton at Leakycon Chicago! These moments celebrating Harry Potter with my family improved our bonds with one another. We may have different skills and personalities, but Harry Potter has created cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

In the Wizarding World, we see many cross-House friendships. Harry, Hermione, and Ron have a close relationship with Luna, who is in Ravenclaw. In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander, a Hufflepuff, and Leta Lestrange, a Slytherin, were best friends growing up. Even Snape and Lily’s relationship proves that the line drawn between Houses is not as finite as one might think. Like my family and I, these characters utilized their strengths and insight to overcome obstacles. We also see this done with Dumbledore’s Army, and when Luna’s knowledge of Rowena Ravenclaw’s ghost helped Harry find a Horcrux. It’s simple to see that everyone is better and stronger working together, no matter what House you Sort into.

My family and I are Sorted into four different Hogwarts Houses, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
