MuggleNet’s 2024 Year in Review

It’s time for MuggleNet’s 2024 Year in Review. Despite challenges and controversy, the Harry Potter fandom continues to march on. And this year was filled with interesting and exciting developments regarding the planned Harry Potter television series, the upcoming Ministry of Magic land at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe, and the various productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Four images combined, showing Dame Maggie Smith as McGonagall, the Harry Potter TV show logo, the Ministry of Magic attraction at Epic Universe, and James and Oliver Phelps in a promotional image for "Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking"

But our most-viewed story of the year was the news from design team MinaLima, who announced they would not be continuing the illustrated Harry Potter series with Scholastic despite having already published three books. Scholastic reached out to us to confirm that the series would continue, but with different illustrators. Many fans were disappointed to learn their illustrated collection would be incomplete or inconsistent.

Another top story was an interesting choice from the franchise – to rebrand the Wizarding World website as HarryPotter.com, having previously rebranded it from Pottermore in 2019. This indicates a changing direction for the franchise, leaning away from the Fantastic Beasts series and into the Harry Potter reboot series.

Meanwhile, the franchise embarked on new projects, with Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking, an upcoming set of full-cast audiobooks, Christmas at Hogwarts, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, and a further-shortened version of Cursed Child.

Sadly, we said goodbye to Dame Maggie Smith, who played Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and passed away this year at age 89. We also said goodbye to the charity Fandom Forward, which announced it was closing operations after 19 years of fan activism.

And those are just a few of the things that happened in Harry Potter news in 2024. Check out all our most popular and most significant news stories on our 2024 Year in Review page.

I have been a fan of Harry since 2000, a fan of MuggleNet since 2005, and a MuggleNet team member since 2013. I believe in the power of stories to bring people together, and nothing does that quite like Harry Potter. I live in Toronto, Canada.
