Live Action Versus Animated: Rumors Suggest “Harry Potter” HBO Max Show May Pivot

The Harry Potter HBO Max television adaptation is still a relatively new development, with little news and many rumors. Only one cast member has been confirmed, John Lithgow as Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, and the internet is abuzz with opinions about casting rumors for characters such as Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape. Now, MuggleNet can exclusively reveal that, according to our sources, the fan commentary (clapback? hatred? tomato, tomahto) has caused doubts in the live-action adaptation of the seven-book series, so much so that the most amazing thing is happening.

An animated series is back on the table!

MuggleNet famously published an April Fools joke allllllll the way back in 2008 that announced an animated series, but this time it is looking entirely plausible. Animation was first considered for the new show but was ruled out when the studio decided they wanted to try and recreate the massive success of the films. They ultimately weren’t confident animation could match (or far exceed) live-action.

We have heard from several folks close to the production that almost daily meetings regarding the pivot back to animation have occurred, as well as conference calls with the author and her representation. Supposedly, the studio is getting cold feet due to the level of disdain the new series is receiving, specifically when it comes to casting choices. Live-action remakes in general are also getting more heat and hate than previously, as people are unquestionably looking for original content. Admittedly, an animation series wouldn’t be original content, but it would be an original medium for the franchise – a smart move, in our opinion.

What do you think? Would you prefer an animated series over yet another live-action remake?
