Halloween is practically a Hogwarts holiday. Between floating pumpkins in the Great Hall, trips to Hogsmeade, and the occasional troll in the dungeon, the Wizarding World has always known how to celebrate spooky season.
And this year, we’re borrowing a little Halloween tradition from the Muggle world of TikTok: the Boo Basket.
If you haven’t encountered one yet, a Boo Basket is a Halloween-themed gift basket filled with sweets, cozy surprises, and seasonal goodies. Think of it as a Christmas stocking’s sinister cousin, usually exchanged between friends, family, or that special someone you want to take to Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop.
We’ve put together eight gift ideas for the ultimate Harry Potter Boo Basket, with a healthy dose of Dark Arts inspiration.
First, you’ll need a cauldron.
Before you start collecting your magical goodies, you’ll need something to put them in. Skip the traditional wicker basket and go straight for a black witch’s cauldron.
A black plastic Halloween cauldron makes an excellent base. Look for one large enough to hold a few books, since those will be the centerpiece of our basket.
Line the inside with dark green or purple tissue paper, then add a little shredded paper filler to give everything some height. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious, a few decorative spiders or miniature potion bottles will help complete the look.
Now, let’s fill it.

1. A collection of books for the Dark Arts enthusiast
Every good Boo Basket deserves a centerpiece, and for our Halloween edition, we’re heading straight to the darker corners of the Hogwarts library.
Media Lab Books’ Character series takes a closer look at three of the Wizarding World’s most complicated characters: Lord Voldemort, the Malfoy family, and Severus Snape.
Voldemort digs into the making of the Dark Lord, from Tom Riddle’s childhood to his obsession with immortality. Malfoy examines the family’s legacy, ambitions, and questionable loyalties, while Snape unpacks the secrets and contradictions of Hogwarts’ famously unpleasant Potions master.
Choose the title that best suits your recipient, or include all three for someone who believes the Restricted Section is where all the interesting reading happens. (Full disclosure, Media Lab Books and MuggleNet share the same parent company, so you’ll be supporting MuggleNet if you choose to include one of these!)

2. A Dark Arts candle to set the mood
Candlelight makes everything feel a little more like Hogwarts, particularly when the candle itself looks like it belongs in Borgin and Burkes.
This Dark Arts candle features the Dark Mark against a black container. Its fragrance combines dark fruit and woody spices for a suitably mysterious atmosphere.

Every witch or wizard needs a good mug, especially when the temperature starts dropping.
We particularly like the idea of including a Dark Mark mug. It looks appropriately menacing on a desk, but its actual responsibilities will probably involve pumpkin spice lattes, tea, and the occasional hot chocolate.
Bellatrix would be disappointed. We think it’s perfect.
Shop the Mug4. Chocolate Frogs, because Halloween needs sweets
A Halloween gift basket without candy would be a serious violation of the Hogwarts spirit.
Chocolate Frogs are an obvious choice, particularly if your recipient enjoys collecting the famous witches and wizards cards. They’re also conveniently sized for squeezing into the spaces between larger gifts.
Shop Chocolate Frogs5. A notebook that looks suspiciously like Tom Riddle’s diary
What’s more appropriate for a Halloween basket than the diary that nearly destroyed Hogwarts?
A Tom Riddle-inspired notebook is perfect for writing down spells, keeping a journal, or recording your most embarrassing memories from your own school years. This version is modeled after the little black diary from Chamber of Secrets, preferably one with plenty of blank pages.
We’d recommend avoiding any notebook that starts writing back.
Shop the Diary6. Cozy Hogwarts socks for chilly October nights
Once the candy has been eaten and the candles are lit, it’s time for a Harry Potter movie marathon. And no respectable movie marathon is complete without comfortable socks.
Pick a pair representing your recipient’s Hogwarts house. We’re particularly fond of green-and-silver Slytherin socks for this basket’s darker aesthetic, although a little Gryffindor scarlet never hurt anyone.
Shop the Socks7. Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans for a Halloween gamble
Halloween is all about tricks and treats, and few Wizarding World sweets deliver both quite as effectively as Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.
Sure, there are delicious flavors mixed in. But there’s also the possibility of encountering something that tastes like earwax, dirt, or rotten egg.
Wrap a box in orange ribbon and challenge your recipient to try a few when you’re watching the premiere of HBO’s Harry Potter this Christmas!
Shop Every Flavour Beans8. A little piece of the Deathly Hallows
For the final item, we’re adding something your recipient can wear long after Halloween is over.
A Deathly Hallows necklace is an understated addition to the basket, featuring the familiar triangle, circle, and line representing three of the most powerful magical objects in the Wizarding World.
The silver-tone designs work particularly well with the black-and-green theme we’ve been building, and they’re small enough to tuck into a miniature gift box.
Shop the NecklaceThe finishing touches: Make it look like it came from Knockturn Alley
Once you’ve gathered your gifts, it’s time to put everything together.
Start by arranging the books toward the back of your cauldron, using the tissue paper to help them stand upright. Place the mug and candle in front, then fill any remaining gaps with candy, socks, and smaller accessories. For an extra bit of Halloween atmosphere, consider wrapping the finished basket in sheer black ribbon or attaching a handwritten gift tag.
There you have it! Eight gifts, one cauldron, all in time for Dark Arts season!
