Harry Potter is taking over part of Oxford Street’s famous Christmas display this year, with new Wizarding World-inspired illuminations set to appear alongside the shopping destination’s traditional stars. The festive transformation comes as London prepares for both the opening of a massive new Harry Potter store and the Christmas premiere of HBO’s Harry Potter television series.
HBO Max and New West End Company, which represents businesses across London’s West End, announced the partnership on October 7. Beyond the lights themselves, the organizations are promising additional Harry Potter-themed celebrations and attractions throughout the festive season.
Exactly what those will look like is being kept under wraps for now.
Hogwarts Magic Comes to Oxford Street
Oxford Street already puts on one of London’s most recognizable Christmas displays each year, with illuminated stars and angels suspended above the shopping district. For 2026, those decorations will be joined by specially designed Harry Potter installations.
We don’t yet know which elements of the wizarding world will make their way into the display. Additional images, details about the Christmas program, and information about the official light switch-on are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Dee Corsi, CEO of New West End Company, described the collaboration as a major moment for the shopping district.
“This will be a historic moment for Oxford Street. Bringing the world of Harry Potter to the street will create an unforgettable Christmas experience and showcase the West End at its very best. It is an exciting opportunity for retailers and a magical moment for shoppers, visitors and fans alike.”
For anyone planning a Christmas trip to London, however, the lights will be only one part of what is shaping up to be a Potter-heavy stretch of Oxford Street.
A New Harry Potter Destination Opens in November
The takeover arrives alongside the opening of Harry Potter Shop Oxford Street on November 4.
Located at The Ribbon at 134–140 Oxford Street, the new destination will span more than 21,000 square feet across two floors, making it the United Kingdom’s largest official Harry Potter flagship shop.
The store takes its inspiration from Diagon Alley and includes themed areas and large-scale features, including a Ukrainian Ironbelly overlooking a Gringotts-inspired section and a full-size Knight Bus. Visitors will also be able to stop at a Leaky Cauldron-inspired food and beverage area, with Butterbeer among the offerings.
And Then There’s the New TV Series
Of course, there’s another reason Harry Potter will be difficult to miss in London this Christmas.
HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on Christmas Day, making the Oxford Street festivities part of the broader lead-up to the new television adaptation. The timing means that, in the space of less than two months, visitors will be able to walk beneath Harry Potter-themed Christmas lights, explore a new Diagon Alley-inspired flagship store, and then head home for the beginning of a completely new onscreen era for the series.
And while we’re still waiting to see exactly what the Harry Potter illuminations look like, we have a few requests. Floating candles? Patronuses? A giant illuminated (new?) Hogwarts stretching across Oxford Street? We’ll keep our fingers crossed.
Further details about the Oxford Street Christmas program and the official switch-on are expected in the coming weeks.
