Helen McCrory discusses “A Little Chaos”, playing strong women, and acting
In an interview with the Telegraph‘s Stella Magazine this weekend, Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy) spoke about her role in Alan Rickman’s (Severus Snape) new film, A Little Chaos, as well as her family life and becoming an actress.
We recently posted about an interview where Helen and Alan spoke about their friendship and meeting on the Potter set. Since then, the two have worked together several times, and Helen opens the interview with a quip about their acting relationship:
As far as I can remember, I have never slept with Alan Rickman…
Jokes aside, Helen said that she was delighted when Alan approached her with the role in A Little Chaos:
I was absolutely thrilled when he sent me the script and asked me to come and play.
Helen further spoke about her acting career so far, saying that
I’m aware that I have been very lucky. But I have also grafted hard. Acting isn’t something that’s just in you. As with anything in life, you have to learn it and work at it and improve yourself all the time.
On the strong female roles she has played, she stated that
most of my friends are strong women. The women in my family are strong women. Characters who aren’t strong women don’t tend to interest me.
Helen also spoke about balancing her family life and acting career:
You want the other one to be the best they can possibly be and to realise their ambitions, but you also have to balance that with your own wants and keeping the children at the centre of it all. It’s a constant dialogue – ‘OK, so if you do this, and I do that afterwards, I’ll be here to keep things going.
A Little Chaos, starring Helen McCrory and Alan Rickman, will be in UK theaters from April 17.
