What’s with Hue?
We all recognize the scarlet and gold of Gryffindor, the black and yellow of Hufflepuff, the emerald and silver of Slytherin, and the blue and bronze of Ravenclaw. But what do these colors mean? Everything J.K. Rowling does is for a reason, so it is not likely that Godric Gryffindor just happened to like the color red. These colors have meaning, which we can learn from psychological association.
Gryffindor:
The color red is associated with physical needs and the will to survive. Red inspires emotion, determination, and ambition. It exudes a strong and masculine energy and represents leadership qualities. Being the color representation of physical movement, it often inspires people to take action. The color is strong-willed and can inspire confidence in those who are reserved. Negative attributes of the color red would include aggression and rebelliousness. The variation scarlet, as it appears in the Gryffindor crest, is a brighter color that is enthusiastic about life and more fun-loving than a true red, tempered with a dash of defiance.
Gold often represents luxury and wealth, but it is also the color of success, achievement, and triumph. The psychology of the color gold implies affluence and extravagance. Gold is considered to possess a masculine energy and the power of the sun. This color is optimistic and adds richness to its environment by illuminating and enhancing everything around it. Gold is captivating and passionate and the color of winners, and it is also generous, giving, and compassionate.
Scarlet and gold are the perfect match for the qualities of Gryffindor. The brave and confident students of Gryffindor are always in the mood for physical activity, though their competitive nature can lead them to aggressive behavior. They are rebellious and fun-loving to boot. Just take a look at the Weasley twins. Gryffindors are certainly passionate and captivating, as well as successful and optimistic. The students of this House often have a good sense of humor and love to share the fun with others.
Slytherin:
Green normally symbolizes nurturing, balance, and harmony. From a psychological perspective, it stands as a balance between the head and the heart. As a color, green has a strong moral compass and usually has good judgment. It weighs every option and the majority of the time, takes a moral stand. This also makes it judgmental and overcautious. This color is related to stability, endurance, and perseverance when faced with adversity. It is the color of prosperity and material wealth. On the other hand, green is possessive and materialistic. Slytherin is specifically emerald green, which has its own description. It’s described as an uplifting color that suggests wealth in all forms.
Silver is a color that is emotional, mysterious, soothing, and purifying. It aids in the release of issues, whether they are mental, physical, or emotional. It opens new doors and lights the path to the future. Silver is also associated with wealth. It can be viewed as glamorous and sophisticated, related to female energy, prosperity, and modernity. Regardless of gender, it relates to people in positions of responsibility. In color psychology, silver is described as respectable, courteous, dignified, patient, determined, and organized. Being a balance of black and white, silver is a lawful neutral that is unbiased and compassionate. In a negative sense, silver is dull, lifeless, cold, insincere, indecisive, and two-faced.
Slytherins are ambitious and cunning, and they have a strong sense of self-preservation. Similar to silver, the sense of preservation occasionally causes Slytherins to be two-faced, keeping their own best interests at heart. This House has a habit of hesitating and weighing all possible outcomes before making a decision. Similar to green, they show that they have strong morals, though they can be judgmental. They are very proud and dignified. Salazar valued cleverness, determination, and a willingness to break rules as well.
Hufflepuff:
Black represents mystery and the unknown. It has secrets hidden deep within it. It develops a barrier to the outside world, protecting itself and hiding its vulnerabilities. Black also lacks self confidence. In color psychology, it provides protection from external emotional stress. Black also means power, control, and keeping things inside. Due to the power it exudes, it can come off as unapproachable and intimidating. Self-control, independence, and a strong will are also frequently associated with black. Usually, black is associated with the negative when in all actuality it absorbs the negative energy around you!
Yellow is regularly associated with learning and acquired knowledge. It resonates in the left side of the brain, which is the logical half. It stimulates mental capabilities, allowing for mental sharpness and perception. Due to being on the lighter side of the spectrum, yellow is uplifting, giving out hope, cheerfulness, and fun. Because it activates the logical side of the brain, yellow inspires individual thoughts and curiosity. Yellow has its feet firmly on the ground and its head out of the clouds. Yellow is a very social color and is a great communicator. It communicates well, is analytical, and is a comedian. Due to its association with decision-making and clarity, it can help focus during study sessions and help recall information during exams. Yellow thinks with its head rather than its heart because of its logical rigidity, making it non-emotional. It stands on its own, preferring to keep itself unattached emotionally.
Several of these aspects are true regarding students in Hufflepuff House. Much like the color yellow, they are open, social, and accepting of all students and Houses. They are very studious and hard-working, so it’s fitting that they are draped in yellow. Like the color black, Hufflepuffs have a strong will when it comes to fairness and loyalty. Hufflepuffs are a happy group that can make you feel warm instantly. Just like black, they take in all the negative around them and exude the positivity.
Ravenclaw:
Blue is the color of trust, honesty, and loyalty. It is a representation of reliability and responsibility, as well as peace and tranquility. Blue relates to one-on-one communication and maintains high ideals and a high level of intelligence. This color is often associated with devotion, whether it be religious piety or dedication to one’s work. Blue is a non-threatening color and very analytical. Negative connotations of the color blue include rigidness and self-righteousness, and blue can be considered old-fashioned. The dark blue of Ravenclaw is a representation of knowledge, power, and integrity.
Bronze is not a precious metal; it is an alloy that is usually comprised of a combination of copper and tin. This color represents something that is firm, stubborn, and enduring in many ancient beliefs. In religion, many altars and temples were made of bronze, and it is often associated with judgment from God. The combination of copper and tin represents both the divinity of copper and the plain tin, which represents human nature.
Ravenclaw is certainly well-represented with the color blue as a symbol of high intelligence. Students Sorted into Ravenclaw are usually quite calm and spend much of their time on their studies. Luna Lovegood is a particularly excellent model of the tranquility that blue represents in Ravenclaw. Their competitive and stubborn nature where their studies are concerned can make them boastful and rigid people.
As always, J.K. Rowling did her homework. While there is room for attributes of all colors to suit any House, these colors were clearly chosen very carefully.
