Top Five Lightest Moments
Happy Diwali, everyone!
To celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, I thought I’d look at some of the lighter and happier moments in the series. Below are my top five lightest Harry Potter moments.
1. Gryffindor Wins the House Cup
It was the best evening of Harry’s life, better than winning at Quidditch, or Christmas, or knocking out mountain trolls . . . he would never, ever forget tonight” (Sorcerer’s Stone 271).
After everything Harry went through with both the Dursleys and all events in first book, the joy he felt when he helped Gryffindor win was infectious.
2. Dobby Is a Free Elf
Got a sock,” said Dobby in disbelief. “Master threw it, and Dobby caught it, and Dobby — Dobby is free” (Chamber of Secrets 338).
Dobby quickly became one of my, and several others, favorite characters in the series. Despite his faults, his good intentions quickly won me over. Plus, the thought of anyone, including himself, hurting him is still hard to think about. It was wonderful when he finally escaped from the oppressive and violent Malfoys.
3. Umbridge and the Fireworks
The upshot of it all was that Professor Umbridge spent her first afternoon as headmistress running all over the school answering the summonses of the other teachers, none of whom seemed able to rid their rooms of the fireworks without her” (Order of the Phoenix 633).
I love this scene in both the movie and the book. It was amazing to see Umbridge getting some of the payback she so deserved. The film portrayed this bright and joyous scene perfectly. The happiness the characters felt was infectious and still makes me smile every time I watch the film.
4. Voldemort Is Defeated
One shivering second of silence, the shock of the moment suspended: and then the tumult broke around Harry as the screams and the cheers and the roars of the watchers rent the air” (Deathly Hallows 744).
After years of fighting, death, and heartbreak, Voldemort finally dies for good. This moment in the book was wonderfully written and jubilant. Unfortunately, the film version did not live up to the triumphant feeling that came across in the novel.
5. Nineteen Years Later
The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well” (Deathly Hallows 759).
It was brilliant seeing that everybody ended up happy after all that they faced. All the pain and suffering both we and the characters felt was worth it after seeing the end.
What do you think of my list? Are there any other light and happy moments you would include? Let us know in the comments!
