“Fantastic Beasts” Roundup: A Case Full of News

by Sophie Reid · December 4, 2016

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was released just over two weeks ago, and that means that most of us have made several trips to our local theater to immerse ourselves in Newt’s magical world of New York in 1926. But that also means that we’re long overdue for another Fantastic Beasts roundup, highlighting some of the magical things that have come our way in the last two weeks.

First up, Ron Perlman (a.k.a. Gnarlack) took the credit for the box office numbers.

MinaLima added a pack of “Wanted” postcards to their Fantastic Beasts range.

Plus, if you’re in London this festive period and want to visit the House of MinaLima, check out their festive opening times.

Ezra Miller (Credence Barebone) spoke about his early days as a Harry Potter fan, something that resonates with many of us.

My dad read me ‘The Sorcerer’s Stone’ when I was seven, and I fell into the story immediately. I then read all the books and would listen to the Jim Dale audiobooks rather obsessively. My routine was that when I returned home from school, I’d put on the audiobooks and eat instant noodles and toast with cheddar cheese on it every day (laughs). I was 17 when the series ended. So I started a little younger than Harry and the gang but ended at the same age. J.K. Rowling created a vehicle, and in that vehicle, I was able to carry some of the things that we have as our natural gifts in childhood – imagination, sense of wonder, sense of what is fair, and what is an innate sense of morality.

And also what it was like to work with Colin Farrell (Percival Graves).

The thing about Colin that I feel compelled to talk about is his intelligence because it’s really, really staggering. It is not only his emotional intelligence as an actor, but his knowledge base, his knowledge of literature, and his way with words. I’m deeply impressed by that man’s brain. When we do interviews together, I usually stay quiet and try to look pretty (laughs).

Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) touched on the future of the series and how he’s looking forward to continuing to play Newt.

I love who she’s written. As an actor, if it’s your dream to tell stories, getting to tell stories within the imagination of one of the greatest storytellers in the world is all you can hope for, really. Long may that continue.

Redmayne also received his OBE this week, from Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski) spoke about some of the spells he’d made up while they were filming.

Leonardo DiCaffeinate is when you’re a little nervous about a scene and you’re like, ‘I don’t know, man, there’s a lot of pyrotechnics in this one.’ The other opposite of that one is Alphonse Cappuccino!

In the same interview, Miller spoke about what it was like to work with Redmayne.

I had a lot of moments where I was doing on-camera work and Eddie was performing harder and with more intent than he had been in his coverage, simply to give me material to work with and respond to. His reputation for being one of the kindest human beings in the universe comes from a very real place. And as a fellow actor, that generosity is constant.

Finally, a newly released behind-the-scenes video shows some of the filming in progress.

Some of the highlights from elsewhere on the site:

The Fantastic Beasts: Cases from the Wizarding World mobile game has been released.

Box office numbers for opening weekend and the two-week mark are in.

We fan cast the younger Albus Dumbledore for Fantastic Beasts 2.

What do cut scenes say about the future of some of Fantastic Beasts characters?

The screenplay was released on the same day as the film.

Catch up on more Fantastic Beasts news here.

Plus, if you need something to fill that Fantastic Beasts hole, then make sure to catch up on MuggleNet’s Fantastic Beasts roundtable and premiere coverage, as well as SpeakBeasty’s spoiler episodes.

That’s it for this week’s roundup! Let us know if we missed anything you think we should have covered or if you have a particular highlight!
