Top Five Moments Gilderoy Lockhart Was a Gift to the “Potter” Fandom
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was a breath of fresh air to the fandom, mainly because we were introduced to the five-time winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award, Gilderoy Lockhart!
1. His ridiculous optimism.
Watching the film, I couldn’t help bursting into laughter at his optimism after accidentally removing the bones in Harry’s broken arm.
Gilderoy Lockhart: Ah… yes, well, that can sometimes happen. Um, but, uh, the point is, uh, you can no longer feel any pain. And, very clearly, the bones are not broken.
Hagrid: Broken? There’s no bones left!
Gilderoy Lockhart: Much more flexible, though.
I mean, you can’t really argue with that logic there, can you?
2. Sir Kenneth Branagh was the perfect addition to the series.
The casting of Sir Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart was pure genius! Not only is he a wonderful actor, but he also brought the character alive like no other actor could!
3. You knew that whenever he showed up, something ridiculous was about to happen!
Okay, so I have to credit Martin from our London team for this addition, but he nailed it! Take for example the disastrous dueling session. Not only did he fail to recognize the tension in the Great Hall between the different Houses like a good teacher should, but he also failed to teach them anything! We’d come to expect this in his classroom, but even with another teacher present, he successfully angered a snake and couldn’t even teach the students to disarm each other!
4. Valentine’s Day!
Without this very special Valentine’s Day, would Harry and Ginny ever have gotten together? Valentine’s Day in the Great Hall was truly a fantastic spectacle! I would have given anything to have seen the dwarf dressed as a cupid tackling Harry to read him Ginny’s poem! But the MuggleNet team’s rap of this poem pretty much made up for that omission!
5. It showed us that appearances can be deceiving.
One of the key themes of Chamber of Secrets was about appearances. The diary appeared to be a normal book, the story of Tom Riddle appeared to be that of a normal student, and the impression of Lockhart was that he was a talented master against the Dark Arts! Lockhart was the key to challenging appearances and looking deeper into the issues.
