First to Go: Is Anthony Boyle Leaving “Cursed Child”?

We always knew that this day would come. The amazing talent showcasing their chops day in and day out in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child couldn’t stay in their roles forever. MuggleNet has been hearing rumors for a few months now that contracts for the talent were up in May – but this is the first near confirmation of that rumor.

In a recent interview with BoysByGirls.co.uk, Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy) discussed a wide range of topics, including his love of monkey documentaries and his own career journey. However, arguably the most interesting revelation came when Boyle hinted toward his future plans – and it doesn’t sound as though they include playing Scorpius for much longer.

I really want to do more movies. With the play, it’s been ten months, and there are four months left, so I’m looking forward to doing more films.

While Boyle is no stranger to a camera, having had roles in movies such as The Lost City of Z and The Journey, the critical acclaim he has gained from his time in Cursed Child is sure to make the transition from stage star to movie star that bit smoother.

In his role in Cursed Child, one of the most notable traits of Boyle’s Scorpius is, without a doubt, his comedic timing. However, the pressure of delivering the perfect punchline proved to be quite the challenge:

In the first play, his role is definitely quite fun, and so it’s lovely to play, but can also be quite high pressure … In the second play he then was on a real huge journey, and there’s a lot less comedy in that presence. I got to be a lot more serious.

It’s not just Scorpius’s journey that Boyle is enjoying, but his look too. Despite being glued and pinned to his head, Boyle is a big fan of his famous Malfoy locks.

How am I finding the blonde wig? I love it, I genuinely love it, I’ve always wanted to go blonde. The first time I put it on it all just came together and felt right.

As for his experiences with the Potter fanbase, although clearly aware of how “massive” the films (and its fandom) are, Boyle had nothing but nice things to say.

It has been lovely; the fan base is just like no other fans in the world; they’re so on it, and you can see why people feel such a connection to the books.
