Trailer for Sir Kenneth Branagh’s “Murder on the Orient Express” Released!

by Mary Wojcicki · June 2, 2017

Take a look at the trailer for the latest adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, and you might notice a Harry Potter alumnus in the role of Belgian detective Hercule Poirot! Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart) is both producing and starring in the film, which includes actors Johnny Depp (Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts), Michelle Pfeiffer (Scarface, Batman Returns), and Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens).

Entertainment Weekly, which posted the trailer, also asked Branagh what he plans to bring to the film. In short, it appears to be an immersive experience:

One of my favorite films of Martin Scorsese — a man I revere — is Age of Innocence. One of the things I thought was just so captivating was the way I was entirely transported to nineteenth-century New York. I could taste and smell [everything]. And I wanted to do that with this. I wanted to bring people onto the train, to celebrate a sort of expertise, and craftsmanship, in everything, whether it’s a wooden panel or the way something is served.

Additionally, says Branagh, he and screenwriter Michael Green are bringing a “primal” element to the story:

I think what I found in the book again, and in the screenplay, was that it unleashed something very primal, very kind of grisly.

He explains that, as a result, the film might be more frightening than anticipated:

I realized that we could find a way to have the fun of Agatha Christie, but have the absolutely deadly intention behind it, and the danger. I think we’re making a scarier film than people might imagine. We’re not trying to turn it into something it isn’t, but I think we’re away from the drawing room mystery, and we’re into something [else]. Because the book is also a dark psychological revenge drama.

The trailer itself hints at the danger to come, setting the scene for the murder mystery aboard the Orient Express. Watch it below!

Murder on the Orient Express is set to be released on November 10.
