How Will Jacob Return in the Next “Fantastic Beasts”?
We finally have more information on the second Fantastic Beasts film! Time to start theorizing! It has been confirmed that Jacob Kowalski is going to return, along with Queenie and Tina Goldstein. The gang will join Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore on their adventures against Gellert Grindelwald. However, there’s one big question: How will Jacob return? I assume that his memory returned in the final scene of Fantastic Beasts, where he sees Queenie in his bakery. If his memory wasn’t fully restored, I’m sure that Queenie rekindled their relationship to start anew.
In my daydreams, I envisage them running away to Europe, where a No-Maj and a witch can be in love and make beastly delectables together. Their purpose for going to Europe could also be to get married. On the other hand, Rowling may want to save that romantic occasion for the end of the films, when Grindelwald is defeated.
Despite my excitement for Jacob’s return (I nearly choked on my coffee), I can’t help but wonder: How will a Muggle manage in the midst of wizards? Especially during such a turbulent time, when Muggles are targets!
We haven’t seen a Muggle interact with wizards on a level playing field. In the Harry Potter books, most of the Muggles we saw were overpowered by wizards. The Dursleys were prejudiced against anything they deemed unusual, but they were reduced to whimpering puddles when confronted with magic. Then again, Rubeus Hagrid did give their son a tail. Frank Bryce, the family at the Quidditch World Cup, and Hermione’s parents were powerless against magic. This made it easy (magically, certainly not emotionally) for Hermione to erase their memories until it was safe once again. The Grangers had very little say in the matter. Most Muggles in the series are either the victims of shrinking keys and the like or Death Eater prey.
It will be interesting to see Jacob find his place in the wizarding world with Queenie by his side. How will he be an asset when one curse can do so much damage, not to mention kill instantly? Jacob being in constant danger with no way of defending himself might strain his relationship with his friends, Queenie in particular. Queenie may not be able to deal with the guilt of sending her love into a situation where he may die. I hope their love stays strong and there won’t be another teary goodbye, where Queenie decides to let him go in order to protect him.
Considering J.K. Rowling’s history of killing off endearing characters, I can only hope that Jacob has the same protection against death that Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger had. Rowling could choose to kill him in future films as a casualty of war or use him to justify the divide between the wizarding world and the Muggle world. I would rather see an example of Muggles and wizards living equally side by side, each having value.
Maybe Jacob’s interactions with Dumbledore will be one of the reasons that he fights so fiercely for Muggle rights in the future.
Jacob has already proven himself in Fantastic Beasts. He seems comfortable in the magical world, despite his humorous moments of awe. If he can handle magical beasts, why not magical humans? Jacob could be an essential second pair of eyes in the group, unaffected by the privilege of magic. He’s able to see common sense solutions that wizards and witches are desensitized to. There may be more incidents similar to him kicking down the door in Fantastic Beasts when Queenie’s spells weren’t working. Even Hermione needs someone to tell her she doesn’t need wood to start a fire sometimes. Different perspectives can be invaluable in stressful situations. Regardless, I think we’re all excited to see the fantastic foursome back in action.
