Guess Which Hogwarts Professors Are Nominated for Critics’ Choice Awards!

by Gayane Kaligian · December 6, 2017

It’s that time of year – the Critics’ Choice Awards are upon us again! This year, three Harry Potter alumni have been nominated for their incredible performances, and John Williams has been nominated for his incredible musical talent.

Dunkirk, which stars Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart), has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Acting Ensemble, and Best Director. Branagh played Commander Bolton, a piermaster in charge of logistics on the Mole, a narrow dock being used for the harrowing escape of 300,000 soldiers. The World War II drama received rave reviews and is the highest-grossing film of its genre.

Gary Oldman is nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, which is also up for Best Picture. This film follows Churchill’s early years as Prime Minister as he navigates the tempestuous political climate of World War II. Darkest Hour and Dunkirk have been compared to one another throughout the year, so it’ll be interesting to see the results of these nominations.

David Thewlis (Remus Lupin) has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie Made for TV or Limited Series for Fargo, a black comedy–crime drama anthology television series based on the 1996 film of the same name. The third season of the show, which premiered this past April, shows Thewlis playing the sinister V.M. Varga, an employee of a mysterious money-lending company.

John Williams has been nominated for Best Score for The Post, which is also up for Best Picture, Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Actress (Meryl Streep), Best Acting Ensemble, Best Director (Stephen Spielberg), Best Original Screenplay (Liz Hannah and Josh Singer), and Best Editing (Michael Kahn and Sarah Broshar). The Post follows Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, the Washington Post, as she races against the New York Times to expose three decades of government secrets.

Best of luck to these wonderful actors! The Critics’ Choice Awards take place on January 11, 2018.
