Domhnall Gleeson Talks Connecting with Character and Negotiating Fame
Domhnall Gleeson, who starred as Bill Weasley and more recently as General Hux in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, sat down with Female First to discuss his film Goodbye Christopher Robin, negotiating fame, and his relationship with costar Margot Robbie.
Goodbye Christopher Robin is a biographical drama film that follows the creation of Winnie the Pooh and the resultant fallout of fame of creator A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson), his wife Daphne Milne (Margot Robbie), and their eponymous son Christopher Robin (Will Tilney). While the rest of the world is enchanted with Milne’s creation, the film deeply ponders the effect of stardom on the struggling family as both mother and father combat their own traumas, Milne from his time in war and Daphne from childbirth.
Gleeson discusses how, although he didn’t have childhood exposure to Winnie the Pooh, he feels that this allowed him a fresh perspective. He further asserts that, despite the emotionally repressive nature of the period, he found moments to connect with the characters and that the characters learning to connect with each other was a large part of the story.
Gleeson has watched his father Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody) handle the perils of fame throughout his life.
People are not built to be well known. That’s not how people are made. Anybody who seeks that there is something inherently missing in them that they have to fill with adulation. So I don’t think that is something I seek out.
Instead, Gleeson’s focus is on “little ways of leaving something behind.”
When asked about his thoughts on costar, Robbie, Gleeson had a glowing response.
I am in awe of Margot. I love her as a person and I love her as an actor. She is amazing. I love knowing her and I really hope we get to work together again. It’s a joy to know her.
