Quidditch Is Coming to the Badlands!
Canadian Quidditch fans have reason to celebrate this week, with the announcement of the foundation of a quidditch team in Hanna. Hanna’s team will be the first in Alberta’s Badlands area.
Team founder Ricky Boyce is already experienced in the quidditch world, having played for the Central Alberta Centaurs, the Calgary Kelpies, and the Quidditch Canada National Championship-winning Edmonton Aurors. Now, he looks forward to bringing the sport into the Badlands, starting with Hanna.
In an interview with the Hanna Herald, Boyce says that he loves the game of quidditch itself, but he enjoys the social aspect of the sport just as much.
My favourite part about playing quidditch is all the people, it’s a very diverse sport. You can meet people from all over the world, or just here in Alberta.
Boyce stresses that quidditch is a sport that everyone can enjoy, no matter what reason brings them to the game.
We get people [who] just love Harry Potter to people [who] are super athletic and they’ve never played a sport like this.
Badlands Quidditch seems to have a passionate leader in Ricky Boyce, who sees the team in Hanna as only the beginning. He hopes that this team will offer a good foundation from which to grow the sport, which is gaining popularity in Canada at large, throughout the region.
It’s a growing sport, and it’s growing more and more each year as we go… We would love to get Hanna and the surrounding Badlands area into the sport. We would love for people to come out and try it.
If you would like to try this exciting sport with Badlands Quidditch, there is still time to join. Registration will take place at the Registration Fair in Hanna on August 28, or you can contact Boyce via email at badlandsquidditch@gmail.com.
This season’s first game will take place September 11. If you’re in the area, stop by for some exciting quidditch action from this new organization!
