Toronto International Film Festival Lineup Stirs Excitement Among Cinephiles Worldwide
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has easily become one of the largest film festivals in the world. With an estimated 480,000 guests annually, the lineup exhibits dozens of films from several countries to said guests. Many critically acclaimed movies have gone on to win Oscar awards after their debuts at TIFF. As a result, the festival has acquired a reputation for generating Oscar buzz around its featured motion pictures.
The 2019 festival, scheduled over 10 days in September, has cultivated an extensive list of films. Many of them, to the delight of fans, have a respectable amount of actors from across the Wizarding World franchise as well. They include but are definitely not limited to Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander).
Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones (Rogue One, Like Crazy) are back on set together with their film The Aeronauts. Pilot Amelia Wren (Jones) and scientist James Glaisher (Redmayne) set off together in a hot air balloon adventure, battling to survive the ferocities of the world while trying to make new discoveries. The film earned a slot in the Gala Premieres at this year’s TIFF, where it will make its Canadian premiere. Redmayne and Jones previously worked together on The Theory of Everything, released in 2014, a biopic of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. A trailer for The Aeronauts has not been released yet, but the photos are raising curiosity about the nature of the film.
Guns Akimbo has been wildly anticipated by the public for months now. Daniel Radcliffe is definitely playing a new kind of character, as seen in released photos from the set. Unfortunately, without a trailer, fans have been left to speculate a lot about the movie. Dan plays Miles, a run-of-the-mill man who pines over his ex-girlfriend, Nova. But when chosen as a contestant in a fight to the death, he must step up to overcome his fears and win back the girl he loves. This film from Radcliffe lands itself in the Special Presentations lineup at TIFF, where it has been scheduled to make its world premiere.
Another movie from the Toronto International Film Festival lineup is a dramatic period piece starring Tim Roth (The Hateful Eight, Planet of the Apes), Clive Owen (Closer, Children of Men), and Richard Bremmer (Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone). Spanning over the course of 50 years, The Song of Names follows the life of Martin (Roth) and his estranged brother Dovidl (Owen), a talented violin prodigy. At 21 years old, Dovidl suddenly disappears just before his first violin concert. More than 30 years later, Martin is sent into a triggered tailspin after he decides to finally search for Dovidl. The movie is based on a book of the same name by Norman Lebrecht. The Song of Names has been selected as another Gala Premiere film during TIFF.
A fourth film premiering at TIFF stars Kelly Macdonald (The Gray Lady, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2) as Georgie in Dirt Music. Georgie is a stranded, unhappy wife living with her husband and stepson in a coastal fishing town in West Australia. After an unexpected encounter with a lone stranger, Georgie finds herself running toward a torrid love affair. In an attempt to find the love she has been searching for, Georgie ends up finding herself as well. Dirt Music has earned its place in the Special Presentations category of the Toronto International Film Festival.
As previously reported, TIFF is slated for September 5–15 in Toronto, Canada, and will also feature special presentations of Guest of Honour, starring David Thewlis (Remus Lupin); The Laundromat, starring Gary Oldman (Sirius Black); Hope Gap, starring Bill Nighy (Rufus Scrimgeour); How to Build a Girl, starring Dame Emma Thompson (Sybill Trelawney); Judy, starring Sir Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore); The Lighthouse, starring Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory); Frankie, starring Brendan Gleeson (Mad-Eye Moody); and Greed, starring Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle) and Stephen Fry, the audiobook narrator of the Bloomsbury editions of Harry Potter. Tickets are available for preorder until September 2.
