Hermione’s Top Seven Magical Moments

Hermione is an amazing witch. After all, she is called the brightest witch of her age for a reason. In honor of Hermione’s birthday, I thought I’d look at her top seven magical moments.

 

Bluebell Flames

 

 

The day before Harry’s first Quidditch match the three of them were out in the freezing courtyard during break, and she had conjured them up a bright blue fire that could be carried around in a jam jar.” (SS 181)

Hermione learned this fairly early on in the series, and it came in handy numerous times. Besides warming up the trio during the winter, Hermione also used it during Harry’s first Quidditch game to save him. By setting Snape on fire, she inadvertently broke the eye contact Quirrell had while cursing Harry’s broomstick. Plus, the fact that it was blue means that it was not only functional, but pretty too.

 

Polyjuice Potion

 

 

‘This is the most complicated potion I’ve ever seen,’ said Hermione as they scanned the recipe.” (CoS 165)

Hermione’s magical knowledge was once again called upon when it came to determining whether or not Draco really was the heir of Slytherin. Even though the Polyjuice Potion she brewed didn’t work out for her, Harry and Ron were able to use it and rule out Draco as a suspect, and they were one step closer to figuring out who was really terrorizing the school.

 

Impervius

 

 

‘There!’ she said, handing them back to Harry. ‘They’ll repel water!’
Wood looked as though he could have kissed her.” (PoA 177)

Although not life-or-death, Hermione’s use of a water-repelling spell on Harry’s glasses really helped him fly during a stormy Quidditch match. Both Harry and Oliver Wood were greatly appreciative of her magical skills.

 

Protean Charms

 

 

On these fake coins, though, the numbers will change to reflect the time and date of the next meeting. The coins will grow hot when the date changes, so if you’re carrying them in a pocket you’ll be able to feel them. We take one each, and when Harry sets the date of the next meeting he’ll change the numbers on his coin, and because I’ve put a Protean Charm on them, they’ll all change to mimic his.” (OotP 398)

Once again, Hermione’s resourcefulness was put to great use, and Dumbledore’s Army was able to conduct meetings in secret – for a while, anyway.

 

Confunding Cormac

 

 

‘I was better than that McLaggen anyway,’ said Ron in a highly satisfied voice. ‘Did you see him lumbering off in the wrong direction on his fifth? Looked like he’d been Confunded. . . .’
To Harry’s surprise, Hermione turned a very deep shade of pink at these words.” (HBP 227)

After his arrogant behavior and his comments about Ron and Ginny, Cormac really deserved his punishment. True, it might not have been the most moral thing that Hermione did, but I definitely understand where she was coming from.

 

Enchanted Bag

 

 

‘How the ruddy hell — ?’
‘Undetectable Extension Charm,’ said Hermione. ‘Tricky, but I think I’ve done it okay; anyway, I managed to fit everything we need in here.’” (DH 162)

Seriously, what would Harry and Ron have done without her? Thanks to Hermione’s forward-thinking, she was able to pack everything they needed for a Horcrux hunt into one convenient bag.

 

Obliviate

 

 

‘We just need to wipe their memories,’ said Harry. ‘It’s better like that, it’ll throw them off the scent. If we killed them it’d be obvious we were here.’
‘You’re the boss,’ said Ron, sounding profoundly relieved. ‘But I’ve never done a Memory Charm.’
‘Nor have I,’ said Hermione, ‘but I know the theory.’
She took a deep, calming breath, then pointed her wand at Dolohov’s forehead and said, ‘Obliviate.’” (DH 167)

She tampered with several people’s memories in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. To protect her parents, she changed their memories so they thought they were different people and that they had different lives. She also wiped Dolohov’s and Rowle’s memories to protect Harry, Ron, and herself.
