Review: Matthew Lewis at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention Fall 2019
Matthew Lewis, known for his portrayal of Neville Longbottom, was one of many celebrity guests at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention Fall 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah. During his spotlight panel and Q&A, he spilled a few secrets and showed us some of that Neville humility, which we can’t help but share with our MuggleNet followers.
He was asked about his favorite deleted scene.
Matthew quickly answered that he hopes that they will someday release the Peeves the Poltergeist scenes starring Rik Mayall. He talked about how difficult it was for them to film because all the kids couldn’t keep a straight face. Fingers crossed that we all do get the chance to see these someday (soon)!
“The only problem was that NONE OF US could keep a straight face with Rick. I just hope that one day you get to see it and see how brilliant and perfect he was in that role.”

He was as humble as the character he portrayed.
Matthew made multiple comments about how shocked he was that the Grand Ballroom was so full for his panel. When a fan asked him about the “Longbottoming,” he quickly pointed out that he wore a fat suit and false teeth for a majority of the movies, but regardless, he doesn’t really get why he woke up one day with news stories about his glow-up.
“I never in a million years would’ve expected [people all talking about the ‘glow-up’]. It’s not my focus, and I’m really humbled, but I don’t get it.”

He just finished filming a movie produced by Taika Waititi.
If you’re a sucker for romantic comedies, Baby Done is set to come out in 2020. If you love Neville Longbottom as much as I do, you’ll definitely want to see Matthew Lewis in this role. Plus, anything Taika Waititi touches is phenomenal.
“I just shot a movie down in New Zealand, by @TaikaWaititi. It’s called ‘Baby Done.’ It’ll be out next year.
I have to do a reshoot next week. That’s actually why I have this disgusting beard. It’s so itchy!”

He’s a Hufflepuff.
That’s right – Matthew took the Pottermore Sorting quiz, and he isn’t a Gryffindor! I can’t say that I’m surprised – it’s no secret that Neville could’ve definitely been a Hufflepuff, and with so many similarities to his character, it makes sense for Matthew to be one too.
Are you a Gryffindor?
“No, I’m actually a Hufflepuff.”

He really admired the people he worked with on Harry Potter.
Not only did Matthew Lewis have the chance to work with many unbelievably talented adults, but he also admits his admiration for his peers he worked with. He talked a lot about Dan’s work ethic, the chance that they had to be regular children during filming, and how grounded they all grew up to be. He said, “It was like school,” and I wouldn’t expect anything less on set at Hogwarts.
“[Dan] could easily put his feet up like, ‘Yeah, I’m Harry Potter, I don’t care anymore.’ But he doesn’t.”
