Harry Potter Day Is Making a Magical Appearance During the Australian Open

by Aly Kirk · January 21, 2020

The Australian Open has decided to welcome witches and wizards from Melbourne’s production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Richard Heaselgrave, the Australian Open Chief Revenue and Experiential Officer, made the announcement earlier in January.

We are all looking forward to being part of the magical world of Harry Potter at the Australian Open this year. These wonderful stories and characters are beloved around the world, and we’re looking forward to welcoming them to the AO Ballpark.

Harry Potter Day is scheduled for Monday, January 27. Cast members from the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Melbourne production are expected to appear in a “spell-casting show,” and the Open will include “presentations of the Harry Potter movies.” If that wasn’t enough for the mix of tennis and Harry Potter fans, select cast members are expected to host a meet and greet opportunity for those in attendance of the Australian Open.

Heaselgrave made the announcement with Coco Gauff and Gyton Grantley. Gauff, at 15 years old, is the youngest player at the tournament and plays for the United States. Grantley, on the other hand, plays the role of Ron Weasley in the Melbourne cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Gauff and Grantley both posed for a few whimsical photos as part of the announced collaboration.

Grantley will be one of the selected cast members to make an appearance at the Australian Open Ballpark. He expressed his excitement for Harry Potter Day:

Since opening in February of last year Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has become a big part of Melbourne’s entertainment landscape, so it’s fitting to be collaborating with the Australian Open this year. Harry Potter Day is going to be a lot of fun, and we can’t wait to share some of the magic we bring on stage every night to the AO Ballpark.

To top the tennis- and Harry Potter-filled day, a lucky family will have the chance to win tickets to the Melbourne production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Princess Theatre or a paid trip for four to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. Those who wish to enter for a chance to win must come to Harry Potter Day at the Australian Open dressed as their favorite characters from Harry Potter.

Do you prefer tennis to Harry Potter or the other way around? Either way, Harry Potter Day thanks to the Australian Open is sure to please a very specific niche of people.

Harry Potter Day to take over the Australian Open

The magic and sorcery of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is set to land at Melbourne Park, with a dedicated Harry Potter Day announced for the AO.

Australian Open Chief Revenue and Experiential Officer Richard Heaselgrave joined Coco Gauff (USA), the youngest player in the main draw, and cast members of the hit production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to outline plans for the special event being hosted at the AO Ballpark presented by Emirates, on Monday 27 January.

“We are all looking forward to being part of the magical world of Harry Potter at the Australian Open this year,” Australian Open Chief Revenue and Experiential Officer Richard Heaselgrave said.

“These wonderful stories and characters are beloved around the world, and we’re looking forward to welcoming them to the AO Ballpark.”

Gyton Grantley, who plays the role of Ron Weasley, said, “Since opening in February of last year, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has become a big part of Melbourne’s entertainment landscape, so it’s fitting to be collaborating with the Australian Open this year.

“Harry Potter Day is going to be a lot of fun, and we can’t wait to share some of the magic we bring on stage every night to the AO Ballpark.”

Grantley will make a special appearance at the AO Ballpark, presented by Emirates, on Harry Potter Day, where racquets will be swapped for wands.

The day will feature a spell-casting show, big[-]screen presentations of the Harry Potter movies and a chance to meet the cast from the multi-award[-]winning play.

The magic includes the chance for one lucky family to win a trip for four to Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studio Tour, London (including flights and accommodation) at a dramatic sound and light show prior to the night session at Rod Laver Arena. Family tickets to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre will also be given away. To enter, families must come dressed as their favorite characters from the Harry Potter series.
