Crookshanks Has an ESTJ Personality
We’ve chosen Myers-Briggs personality types for Pickett, Dobby, and Dougal, so now it’s Crookshanks’s turn. While he had a role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Crookshanks was featured very little. For a character who was given a big introduction – being chased around the Magical Menagerie shop in Diagon Alley – he slowly fades into the background of the book. This makes the cat, who we later find out is half-Kneazle, a puzzling character. However, from what we as readers do know about Crookshanks, we can assume that he has an ESTJ personality.
The ESTJ personality type, also called the Executive type, is all about dedication and dignity. I think it’s safe to say that Crookshanks is always the picture of decorum. He always has a snotty look on his face, which is part of the character’s appeal. Crookshanks is dedicated to Hermione without question. Unlike most cats that would resist being hugged, Crookshanks usually does whatever Hermione wants. Hermione is often described as hugging him tightly. Also, this personality type has no problem facing a challenge. When Crookshanks befriends Sirius Black, he doesn’t flinch at Sirius being a supposed mass murderer – as long as they’re friends, it’s okay. Crookshanks commonly sneaks out of the castle in order to help Sirius hide. This must have been difficult to sneak away from Hermione undetected, but he was able to do it. In my eyes, this makes him almost as smart as Hermione. He is definitely more street smart.
Another interesting aspect of the ESTJ personality type is that they don’t work without praise. They are willing to work hard but only if their work is appreciated. Lots of domestic pets value praise, so it’s no surprise that Crookshanks does as well. When Hermione first meets Crookshanks, Ron insults the cat over and over again. However, when Hermione holds Crookshanks in her arms and says what a handsome feline the cat is, he notably purrs. Hermione realizes quickly that Crookshanks loves constant praise more than anything else.
Those with the ESTJ personality type will get angry and upset when they aren’t acknowledged. This accurately describes Crookshanks and any cat really. He has a crazy temper. He is never afraid to lash out against Hermione’s friends. In fact, Crookshanks has been known to chase Scabbers around the Gryffindor common room, much to Ron’s dismay. At first, his anger towards Scabbers seems unprovoked, but later, we learn that Scabbers was a dangerous criminal. Did Crookshanks know this? I believe he definitely did know and wanted to stop Scabbers before he hurt anyone.
When it comes to weaknesses and struggles, this personality type tends to be judgmental and stubborn. This definitely applies to Crookshanks, a cat who either has to have it his way or the highway. Crookshanks likes to make his own decisions. This is an independent cat who prefers alone time. While he does love to be stroked and hugged by Hermione, there is something wild about the cat’s personality. Maybe it’s because Crookshanks is half-Kneazle. He always has a grumpy face no matter the situation. It’s like Crookshanks is sitting around and quietly judging everyone. Maybe Crookshanks just thinks he knows best because he is smart, but his face is way too intimidating.
Another aspect of life that this personality type struggles with is showing their emotions. Unless Crookshanks is purring, he shows little to no emotion. Usually, it’s Crookshanks’s actions that define his personality. When Crookshanks jumps into Hermione’s arms or purrs while sitting next to Sirius, it’s clear he is in a happy mood. However, due to expressing limited emotion, Crookshanks has trouble making friends at Hogwarts. Hermione and Sirius are the only people who can tolerate Crookshanks. ESTJ personality types are often so focused on their lives that they neglect to spend time with friends and family. Sometimes, no one could find him because Crookshanks was busy exploring the castle grounds.
