Potter DIY: Hogwarts House Scarves

by Aly Kirk · March 26, 2020

This latest project has you going to your Hogwarts House for inspiration. Some of the quickest and simplest patterns to follow are those for scarves, and we will guide you through this one! This kind of pattern works whether you’re experienced or just starting out. A simple single stitch is a great way to complete an easy and quick project.

What You’ll Need:

  • 3 skeins yellow yarn (207 yards each)
  • 2 skeins grey or silver yarn (207 yards each)
  • 2 small skeins multicolor yarn (95 yards each)
  • 2 small skeins white yarn (95 yards each)
  • Size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Pom pom maker (optional)

Directions (Hufflepuff):

Step 1: Grab your yellow yarn and hook and start with a simple slip knot and chain 36 + 1 stitches. That’s the first row.

Step 2: To start a second row, turn your work. That just means you’ll have your chain on the left side of the hook so you can crochet from right to left. Insert your hook into the second stitch from the hook, and single crochet all the way across until you have a total of 36 stitches.

Step 3: Once you have two rows of yellow, turn your work and add a second color. We’ll use gray. Don’t cut your yellow yarn – just align the gray yarn with the yellow and single stitch it into the second stitch from the hook. Continue all the way across until you have a total of 36 stitches.

Step 4: Once you’re at the end of the row and have finished using the gray, leave a small tail (about two inches) of gray yarn off to the side. To do this, just cut the gray yarn and turn your work.

Step 5: Single stitch crochet two more rows of yellow before adding the white yarn in the same way you added the gray. Remember – don’t cut the yellow to add another color.

Step 6: Single stitch crochet one row of white like we did with the gray. Then add two more rows of yellow before adding the multicolor yarn.

Step 7: Continue alternating between yellow, gray, yellow, white, yellow, and multicolor until you reach your desired length.

Step 8: Once you reach a length that you like, be sure to end your project with the yellow yarn. This will keep the pattern consistent with how you started it and will help keep the gray, white, and multicolor yarn from fraying. Once you get to the last stitch of the last row, cut the yellow yarn. Give yourself about three inches of extra yarn on the end so you can tie a small knot so your project doesn’t unravel.

There you have it! You have your very own House scarf to keep you warm through winter. If you want to create a scarf by using other House colors, all you need to do is change out the yellow and multicolor yarns for your own House colors: red for Gryffindor, green for Slytherin, and blue for Ravenclaw. The pattern remains the same, despite changing yarn.

Did you try this pattern? Tell us what you think!
