Five Fabulous Wizarding World Style Moments: The Girls Edition
Last week, we highlighted five iconic style moments from the wizards of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films. Now, it’s the witches’ turn. Looking back at the catalog of outfits selected for the ladies of the series, there’s no shortage of memorable moments to chose from. I love how these characters’ personalities shine through in the costume designers’ choices. Wizarding world fashion beautifully blends the whimsical with the elegant, the eccentric with the timeless.
In no particular order, here are five wizarding world ‘fits that Stupefy’d my heart.
Fleur’s Wedding Dress
Although Fleur’s wedding dress is described as simple in the book, I immediately forgave the costume designers for their book-to-screen inconsistency. The floor-length tulle skirt looks like it’s made of feathers and matches the two phoenixes joined to make a heart. What a perfectly lovely symbol of her love for Bill – two brave members of the Order who wouldn’t let a war stop them from celebrating their love. Designer Jany Temime said she selected the phoenix symbol for Fleur because “like love, it is eternal.” The matching black headpiece adds a too-appropriate touch of drama for this gorgeous bride. The whole look is a showstopper.
The Goldstein Sisters’ Pajama Party Look
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) gave us so many swoon-worthy, 1920s-inspired looks. It was hard to pick just one of the Goldstein sisters’ serves to write about. Some may have chosen their quick change at The Blind Pig or their color-coordinated coats (Tina favors blue; Queenie, pink). I loved seeing the girls in their PJs, which is a perfect everyday moment and illustrates their personal style preferences. Tina is ever-practical in her baby blue jumpsuit. The cinched waist looks professional, even though it’s sleepwear. Queenie, on the other hand, looks luxurious in a peachy pink nightgown and matching robe. The lace neckline is a perfect girly touch for this fashionista.
Luna’s Slug Club Holiday Look
When it comes to daring fashion choices, Luna Lovegood is 100% that witch. Her dress robes for the Slug Club Christmas party are no exception. I have a sense that she loves a themed outfit. While her choices are not traditionally formal, they suit the holiday perfectly. Luna’s twinkly, tiered dress literally looks like a Christmas ornament. The rosy frills are like garland, and her dangly star-shaped earrings are equally reminiscent of a Christmas tree. Plus, her pointed-toe shoes in shiny gold remind me of a Christmas elf. Head-to-toe, Luna’s feeling the Christmas spirit. I know I’ll be taking inspiration from this look next holiday season.
Trelawney’s Daily Hippie-Chic
Stevie Nicks meets classic fortune-teller in Trelawney’s day-to-day teaching getup. Sybill’s outfit reminds me of a more traditional idea of what a witch might wear. Her look is totally bohemian-inspired, with a flowy, earth-toned dress and shiny silver embellishments. Where Trelawney really shines in her style is her accessories. I love the fringe on her headband and her layered silver necklaces, rings, and bracelets. While Hermione may not be convinced, Sybill’s big, bug-eyed spectacles definitely convince me of her “sight.” Overall, this professor’s look is a thrift store junkie’s dream come true.
Hermione’s Cinderella Moment
Obviously a list of favorite Potter fashion moments wouldn’t be complete without Hermione’s big reveal at the Yule Ball. While Hermione’s pink gown doesn’t match the book’s periwinkle description, I remember my jaw hitting the floor in the movie theater seeing her walk down the staircase. The dress’s gentle ruffles and ombré skirt are feminine and perfectly flouncy. I love the construction of the bodice, which gives her a beautiful hourglass shape. My favorite detail of her outfit is the small, flower-shaped earrings that match the dress. She looks totally angelic, and I’d be jealous too, Ron (just for different reasons).
