Melbourne’s “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” to Resume Performances in February 2021
2020 has been a difficult year for the performing arts industry, with both rehearsals and performances being postponed all around the world. This includes productions of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which have been suspended or postponed in Hamburg, London, Melbourne, New York, San Francisco, and Toronto.
After a record-breaking run at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre, the production was suspended after the government implemented public health measures due to COVID-19. Performances, which last took place on March 15, were set to resume on January 20, 2021, while ticket sales were suspended through the end of May 2021 in anticipation of having to push that opening date back yet again.
But after a hiatus of 49 weeks, there is good news for Melbourne fans because it has been announced that Cursed Child will officially be resuming performances on February 25, 2021.

Producers Sonia Friedman, Colin Callender, and Michael Cassel shared their delight at being the first city in the world to reopen Cursed Child performances.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all Victorians and the State Government for their commitment during these extraordinary times, and for allowing us to safely return. We are thrilled to congratulate Melbourne as the first city in the world to re-open Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and extend a special thank you to our loyal audiences who have stuck with us. On behalf of everyone in the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child company, we can’t wait to welcome you back.
For those who might be concerned about returning to the theater during the pandemic, Jason Marriner, the CEO of Marriner Group, which owns the Princess Theatre, has assured audiences that health and safety procedures are in place for all performances.
The health and safety of our audiences are paramount, and we can assure everyone entering the Princess Theatre doors that the utmost care and detail has gone into making the theatre-going experience safe. We very much look forward to welcoming you back.
Tickets are now on sale, and those with performances booked between January 20, 2021, and February 24, 2021, will be contacted with automatically rescheduled dates.
